TEXANS CENTER "CHRIS MYERS" SUSPICIOUS BREAKDOWN OF SPORTS RADIO 610 - LM

TEXANS, CHRIS MYERS UNFAIR SCRUTINY OF JOSH INNES (610)

I am in a weird place, I am defending the media.  Tuesday, two days after a big win versus the Titans in Nashville, I assume viola all Texans are available.  Thanks guys, but make yourself available after a loss too, see Albert Pujols.

Josh Innes is a self centered grade A prick, he do not want you to kiss his ass, he don't even want your compliments however I think his goal is being the best at his job.  Josh Innes is the first to tell you, he does not care about Xs and Os, but I do.  You see where I am going with this?  Last year Josh Innes at the inception of HMW made some comments we took exception too therefore we went in but in that 2 to 3 week event, we all respected the fact that he spoke his mind.  When I say "spoke his mind", I am talking about the Texans.  Josh is one of the few at 610 who will tell you what he thinks about Texans minus the fluff.  I know friends outside of HMW, who likes Josh because he speaks his mind about the Texans.

I must say, it was really hard for me to write this article because 610 is so program oriented, you never know if something is scripted or a bit.  With that being said, I am going to assume this Chris Myers' piece was legit.  Apparently, Chris Meyers joined Marc and JLo, during his visit, Meyers HMW'd Sports Radio 610 Shows.  In other words, Myers gave a quick synopsis of  610's line up.   I know this was all in fun but it get realistic when he gets to Josh.

What pushed me to write this article is the fact, that Chris Myers went through the majority of 610 Line Ups, and "went in" on a single personality.  For the most part, he was Politically Correct and nice with his analysis of each show/host but when he got to Josh Innes, he got a little salty.  Thanks goodness he didn't key in on Norm Miller or Greg Koch.  What really stood out is his true statement about Josh not knowing Xs and Os, it only stood out because I asked myself, "when do you hear Xs and Os on 610 period?"

Xs and Os

Chris Myers comments were odd because he described each personality to the "T" but when he got to Josh, he blasted the dude for not knowing Xs and Os.  When I say he blasted Josh, I really mean, he laughed at Josh lack of football knowledge.  Newsflash, Meyers, the only people who come close to Xs & Os on 610 is ND Kalu, Greg Koch and Barry Warner.

I am really proud of Josh for not obliterating New York Jets Jenkin's prison property Chris Myers.  I am not locking ass for Myers clowning Josh because Josh will admit he do not know football to that extinct but I will clown him for not being fair and the truth is, outside of Barry, ND, and Greg, none of those guys are  Xs and Os.

WRAP IT UP

Chris, if you really want Xs and Os, you are listening to the wrong station however if you and the Texans are mad because Josh calls suck "SUCK" then I am sorry, we are nine years deep in this.    It's clear that certain personalities who try to be honest about the Texans are enemies of the locker room material.

Josh Innes does not receive a free pass, HMW said back in the gap, things would get more difficult for Josh because of his arrogance and constant negative attitude in regards to anything Houston or Texas.  Right about now, I am sure Chris Myers, seems like the hero for being the Texan "Pro" who semi called Josh out.

As stated before, I really do not know if this was a spoof because Sports Radio 610 commonly make fun of themselves which is cool however if it was legit, Chris Myers needs to listen closer.  With that being said, I am happy the myth of "players not paying attention to media" was dispelled not only by Chris Myers but Texans NT Cody.  What is more interesting is to see the amount of Texans all over town after a win. I have no problem with Myers, but I find it a tad strange that he would only bust on Josh Innes.

Josh listen and listen good, you are in Texas, you have a feminine voice, you speak your mind, you like winning, and you see through social bull bleep, by those attributes, you are not welcomed in Texas, go to California.

DON'T COUNT JOHN GRANATO OUT JUST YET! - CRAIG SHELTON - 10/21/2011

DON'T COUNT JOHN GRANATO OUT JUST YET!
Written by: Craig Shelton
Date posted: 10/21/2011

Allow me to begin this story with a borrowed line from the piece of work that is ESPN College Game Day analyst Lee Corso, "not so fast, my friend!"
Lance Zierlein & John Granato

Just when we we're all ready to crown the new Sports Talk 790 morning drive show (The Big Show) kings of the airwaves, a veteran in the game, steps up to remind us that, he'll have a say in who's actually putting on the best brand of entertainment in Houston's morning drive sports talk format. I've listened to John Granato on 1560 The Game in morning drive post John & Lance (Zierlein) breakup, as he's partnered up with Sean Pendergast, Travis Rodgers, and my personal favorite, John Harris.

I have yet to tune in to John Granato and have the immediate negative sensation that I've experienced when listening to his former co-host Lance Zierlein, when I have listened to the Sports Talk 790 Big Show. That negative sensation I speak of is by no fault of Zierlein, but more so an incorrect equation, in the inexact science of radio chemistry. Zierlein, Adam Wexler, and Matt Jackson doesn't add up in my view as a long term winner for Sports Talk 790.

Though I'm a fan of Zierlein, I almost immediately recognized the holes in him being paired with Wexler and Jackson. To the contrary, when I listened to John Granato, his transition appears a lot smoother at 1560 The Game. Surprisingly enough, with Granato, there's no immediate negative sensation or "oh oh" factor. Maybe we should have all seen it coming? When you really think about it, there's no reason not to expect John Granato not to put on a quality product.

Cube
Granato has hustle skills and is a salesman by nature, with leadership attributes. Granato is quick on his feet with timely humor, but can be temperamental in a controlled manner, which feeds into his on-air approach. In other words, the guy has pride and add to that the component of what hip hop icon Ice Cube once said in a verse, "I started this sh*t"!

John Granato and Lance Zierlein definitely helped start the current wave of sports talk entertainment in Houston. We accept humor injected into our sports feed largely because of what we were fed by John Granato & Lance Zierlein. Therefore, the expectation of how we expect to be entertained by our local sports talk hosts in Houston, is a direct result of the almost decade-and-a-half of success of the John & Lance Morning Show.

POWER MOVES

Take into consideration John Granato's bold move in leaving CBS/Sports Radio 610 to launch KGOW 1560 The Game, and the type of self-confidence and vision it takes to make that decision, amid the success he was enjoying at CBS. When you compartmentalize that dichotomy, it lends a look into the fiber of Granato's competitiveness.

I don't see a scenario where 1560 The Game will surpass SportsRadio 610 or the secondary market leaders in listener ratings. I say that because of the 1560/Yahoo national format dominating their programming, not as an indictment of the assembled talent at 1560. Local talk simply rules the day in Houston sports talk, it always has and always will.

THE MONEY TRAIN

Sources have indicated to me that one issue that brought the original version of 1560 down was an absorbency in structure regarding payroll. Much of that fat has been trimmed via departures of key out front personnel and less visible personnel to the public. The argument could be made that if Granato was to move on for greener pastures, it could be a "win-win" for both Granato & 1560/Yahoo Radio.

If Granato was to leave 1560 for a better personal career choice financially, who could fault the guy for that? Not me. That would leave 1560 with a hole in the morning drive slot, but Sean Pendergast could be serviceable in that slot at lesser cost. With 1560's predominantly national format, they could remain sponsor-dollar friendly, with less overhead in staffing. In effect, 1560/Yahoo can lose the ratings war, but maintain a bottom line premise of success? (Just a thought.)

What I expect to see happen in regard to Granato long-term, is speculation to say the least. But I expect that in time, a 1560TheGame competitor will make a run at Granato and throw some significant ca$h his way in an attempt to greatly improve their stations cache of talent. Obviously, I'm not inside the Granato think-tank, but based on his career resume, it wouldn't shock me to see Granato on the move if the money train comes rolling down the tracks with his bank account as a destination. Perhaps if Sports Talk 790 intends to have a true "Big Show" they'll be the ones calling and a J&L "the remix" version could be in the cards?

Let's be honest folks. We all know John Granato & Lance Zierlein can survive independent of each other and have success.
But when it comes to enjoying true chemistry in sports talk radio in Houston, the harsh reality of the situation is, the majority of us all enjoyed them both much more when they were together.

MATT THOMAS (790): DO YOU KNOW FOOTBALL? - LM

MATT THOMAS: WE HAVE AN EDITOR

There are very few in this market it pains me to write about in a negative light because I like them.  To be honest this wouldn't have even been an article an article until I questioned myself "did Matt really say what I thought he said".  Trust me you will find out what "he said"  shortly.

When I hear a media person attack a Professional athlete and they don't know the fundamentals of the professional athlete's job, it really gets my blood boiling.  We got a taste of this last year when Rich Lord could not tell Craig Shelton (1430) the basics of the 3.4 defense.  Although Rich Lord ejected, that is baby food compared to the conversation between Craig and Matt Thomas.

Let me set this up, Matt Thomas along with all of the media in Houston has suddenly keyed in on Jacoby Jones (Scapegoat Jones).  Matt Thomas ended his weekly interview with Mike Florio (PFT) and said he had two callers on hold, he would get to them after the break. Matt took the first call and proceeded to the next call, Craig.  Craig's beginning statement was Schaub should have ran the ball and he had NFL players who agreed with them (ND Kalu, Tony Brackens and Marcus Coleman).  If Schaub would have ran and no matter the outcome, he would have built more equity.  It was a nice back and forth conversation as Craig begin to really get to the "meat" of his call, basically he did not understand why Jacoby Jones is all of a sudden the focus when all of Houston saw Matt Schaub make plenty of bad plays.  Matt Thomas replied with the media "talking point" Jacoby ran bad routes.  It was at this point Craig asked Matt "do you know what a route tree is", Matt replied "No".  OK, I feel as if I don't even have to write anymore, I was shocked. However it did not stop there, Craig went further by asking "how can you say Jacoby ran bad routes when you don't even know what a route tree is", Matt replied by saying people he trust and know told him.  I was absolutely done.  In case I misremembered,  the Audio is below, just click. and listen

MATT THOMAS AND LESBIAN CRAIG

Let me begin by saying depending on the levels or areas you learned football, it was either "Route tree" or "Passing Tree".  When the guys finished, Matt Thomas made a few "route tree" one liners in an attempt to shoot back at Craig after the call ended and that's cool, it is what it is.  HMW is not tripping on Matt Thomas because his show is one of the few all of HMW "CUT" for.

ROUTE/PASSING TREE FOR MATT THOMAS

The passing tree as I learned in the 5th grade were the most fundamental elements learned as a receiver.  In other words if you were a transfer kid/student to a school/league with sophisticated language such as dig, drag, flare, or fade routes, the coach could simply tell you the numbers instead of the language.  The Passing Tree is universal.

  • 1&2 are direct slants
  • 3&4 are down and cuts in (45 degree)
  • 5&6 are curls
  • 7&8 are Post
  • 9 is a Fly
Of course all of these routes are solely based on what side of the ball the receiver is on.

WRAP IT UP

As I said earlier, I had no intentions on writing this but I see what the media is doing in this Jacoby/Schaub situation.  It seems as if they are giving Schaub a pass while "going in" on Jacoby.  As I listened to Craig and Matt's conversation, for the life of me I could not understand the fact that everyone agrees that Schaub has not played well all season.  I am thinking to myself, Schaub is the most important person on the roster, he's worth more money, and he touches the ball every single snap so why are we focusing on Jacoby Jones.

Instead of focusing on Jacoby Jones as the culprit of the Raiders game how about the media discuss ways Gary Kubiak (quarterback fixer) can improved Schaub's mechanics.  Ankle Balls and Tip Passes don't get the job done,  No one is asking to replace Schaub but how about a discussion on fixing the messed up stuff Schaub is doing.  The funny thing is, in Kubiak's presser, Matt Jackson (790) came out of the gate asking questions about Schaub's mechanics and I thought he was going there but with time constraint I guess he couldn't.

As far as Matt Thomas, not cool to come on "Major Market" radio and say Jacoby ran bad routes when you admitted to not knowing the fundamentals of route running and follow it up by saying "people you trust told you he didn't run good routes".  What really sucks in this whole Matt Schaub fiasco, Matt Thomas freaking interviewed an Oakland Raider who told him that Matt Schaub CHOKED.  That Oakland Raider didn't say Jacoby ran the wrong route, he along with million websites and message boards singled out Matt Schaub. "Ole Boy Choked" Tommy Kelly is viral.
