SPORTS RADIO 610 PROGRAM DIRECTOR “CHECKLIST”

SPORTS RADIO 610 New Program Director “MUST DOs”

Now that Gavin Spittle is no longer a part of Sports Radio 610, there are few things I expect from the new Program Director.  I would like for the new PD to make a few minor changes:  Bits,Giggling, Texts, Houston, and Love You Blue.

BITS

If you do not know what a “bit” is, it’s a cheesy way to fill space on the air.  Over the last couple of years, Sports Radio 610 has mastered the "Art of Bit Radio".  Bits are one of the lowest forms of radio right next to “lists”.  I am not unreasonable and I can understand a few bits here and there, but 610 has went “Game Show” mode.  Most likely to Happen, Top 3, Celebrity Birthdays, Off the Top of Barry’s Bald Head, Headlines, Meltser’s Meltdown  and more.  It’s like listening to the Price is Right on loop.  It’s all in semantics in what you want to define a “bit” but I am talking all of the Bells and Whistles like you are at damn carnival.

LOPEZ GIGGLING

In my years of listening to radio there have been a few annoyances by host that have driven me crazy.

• J Mac’s (97.9 The Boxx) The way he say’s “Playa”
• Lance Zierlein's Throat Clearing
• Jim Rome’s Pregnant Pauses (extended silence)
• Barry Warner, Matt Jackson and Nick Wright’s Voices

But none of them drive me more insane than John Lopez’s "school girl" giggling.  At this point there is nothing more I can say or write, the crap is freaking annoying and I cannot listen to In The Loop for no more than two to three segments at a time max.  I much rather listen to the competition interview and talk college for endless amounts of time than listen to John giggle through Sports Talk.  One thing that will alleviate all of Lopez’s giggling is if he actually tried to become a better host rather than use his giggling as a crutch as a supplement for shit he can’t think of.  It’s very similar to a person who uses excessive profanity; they are substituting for words they can’t think of.  I know one thing, if Hollywood decides to do a remake of Dr. Giggles, they should contact John Lopez.

TEXTING

Sports Radio 610’s love affair with Text Messages boggles my brain.  I am not sure what the logic behind 610 Hosts reliance on text when everything is out in the open on Twitter.  Maybe they are selling the feature for some kind of revenue but it’s freaking antiquated and really odd when CBS is usually the ones in front of the pack on certain elements of radio.  The texting allows them to pull weak ass moves on air.  Here's their favorite one, when someone is tapping that ass on text, they get back on air and say something along the lines of “Oh, this is a guy who is talking about me and he can’t spell ______”.  Weak! For what it’s worth, Josh Innes is the only one at 610 that do not utilize the texting feature. 

I listen to radio all over the country and I have come to realize most of the CBS affiliates are still utilizing texting so maybe it’s not a local decision to be made.

HOUSTON

I will keep it short and sweet,  Sports Radio 610 need more Houston or significant local talent.  People who actually know Houston.  It’s cool to get that outside perspective but 610’s “on air” staffing represents little Houston.  Most of the guys "on air" at 610 are carpetbaggers, they have no true allegiance to Houston and I don’t expect them to.  It’s a "catch 22" because your locals here are dug in and their heads are so far up Houston team’s ass they refuse to “rock the boat” but then the carpetbaggers have such a piss pour way of representing the teams or city for that matter, it sucks.

LOVE YOU BLUE

I realize this is a sensitive topic to some but oh well.  There is way too damn much of Love You Blue talk on 610.  I have heard every Love You Blue story at least twice. Yes, 5 or 6 years ago, the stories were sentimental and got me all warm inside but I am tired of hearing about a team that lost.  Thanks to 610, anytime I hear anything Love You Blue on any station or TV, I get physically ill and turn it off.  Would it hurt for 610 to show some interest int he Run N Shoot Oilers?  Just saying.

WRAP IT UP

It's kind of hard to tell a station who's dominating the ratings to change but for my own personal taste, I wanted to specify the things I do not like.  I would  respect what Sports Radio 610 is doing more if they get the sex change "flipped their format" to a genre consistent to what they are delivering.

There are a couple minor things I chose to leave out like SPORTS.

Wow, how cool would it be if a Sports Talk Leader actually delivered sports instead of scoffing at shows who do.
