TAKE THE DAMN CAPE OFF OF ADAM SILVER; HE IS NO HERO! - RICHARD WALKER - 4/30/2014

NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER

TAKE THE DAMN CAPE OFF OF ADAM SILVER; HE IS NO HERO!

In response to yesterday’s decision by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to ban LA Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, for life, let me be crystal clear on one thing, folks: He's not a hero by a longshot...he took the politically correct/PR friendly route and he may not even be able to permanently keep Sterling out of the league because his decision was a knee jerk reaction to take the pressure off the league.

If Silver wants to truly impact change in the NBA, he should start by going through the issues that former commissioner, David Stern, clearly overlooked during his tenure, most notably the track records of its team owners. This Donald Sterling fiasco should be a powder keg for accountability in the league from ownership all the way down to the popcorn vendors.

The scary thing about this decision is where are the boundaries going to be drawn? A dangerous precedent is being set here because the next level will be where players are expelled and/or cut from teams for using racist/sexist/anti-gay, whatever language.

IT HAPPENS folks, and I dare say that Sterling is NOT the only owner in the NBA who shares the same views in private. Those other individuals simply have not been caught (yet).

Personally, I prefer for bigots to identify themselves. It's the people who have hate in their hearts, but smile in your face and portray the public "good guy" persona that you have to worry about.

You can tell a lot by a man's ACTIONS instead of his words. Sterling is a bad guy because of what he's DONE, not because of what he SAID.

David Stern sat on his fat ass and literally saw Elgin Baylor and Mike Dunleavy's contracts come across his desk, and he didn't bother to question why the GM made $350K, yet Coach Dunleavy made $4.25 million per year?

Sterling has been sued by the Department of Justice and H.U.D. REPEATEDLY for discrimination in housing and hiring practices. I could care less what a man says, it's his ACTIONS that really show who he is.

This is not the time to celebrate Adam Silver as the “beacon of light” for racial equality in the NBA. At the end of the day, Donald Sterling is STILL the Clippers team owner and they will have to pry his ownership stake away from his cold dead hands.

The NBA constitution DOES NOT outline terms under which team ownership rights can be revoked due to a bad public relations event.

Good luck in pursuing it from that angle, Adam. I’m certain that you are aware of that and perhaps this “lifetime suspension”, which probably won’t be upheld as well, is just a part of your plan to take the heat off the situation because you don’t actually know how to address it.

Adam, you don’t get a badge of honor for putting out a fire, when you (as NBA Chief of Staff and Asst. Commissioner) and David Stern ignored the guy who threw a lit cigarette next to a gas can…sorry Adam, the price of “Silver” isn’t any more valuable today than it was yesterday.
