ASK JOHN HARRIS - DENVER BRONCOS VS HOUSTON TEXANS

Before Each Teans Game, Texans Sideline Reporter and Analyst answer Houston Texan questions.

Lately we have been bombarded with so much silly talk, its nice to see a host who's keeping it strictly Football.

Below is John Harris with Texan Fans

Houston Texans vs Denver Broncos

John Harris:
Alright, time to kick off this chat from a mile high, my friends. Let's GO!

Comment From Guest
Is it really bad or really good that so many UDFA are poised to be decent contributors?
4:53
John Harris:
Hmm, good question...I don't have an issue with HOW players get there just that they are here, if that makes sense. I've never lost sleep that the Texans didn't draft Arian Foster...just glad he's here, ya know?
4:53
Comment From Guest
First off, I love your writing style and inside info. Is Cushing playing today?
4:55
John Harris:
Thanks so much...I haven't gotten "sit/start" yet from the PR gang but I think he may get a few reps. He worked out throughout the week, so that might be enough for the coaching staff. Had they not worked out in Denver this week v. Broncos, I'd say for sure he'd play. But, he got some good reps in practice this week. Still, I think some live reps, for a series would help all involved.
4:55
Comment From Bob
Who will be the second ILB next to Cush for week 1?
4:56
John Harris:
I think it's fluid. Tuggle's been good, very good throughout TC. But, Tarp and Mohamed aren't far behind if at all. I know this sounds odd, but it doesn't really matter - all 3 can do what the Texans want on first down. Help get into 2nd and long then it's nickel/dime time.
4:57
John Harris:
Dadgum right!
4:57
Comment From Ian "The Gray" Wulf
I'd like to know your honest opinion/analysis about the overall depth and durability of this team.
5:00
John Harris:
There are certain spots where I worry about depth - OL, especially at tackle. S behind Swearinger worries me a bit, perhaps the entire safety position. I don't worry about CB as some do. If Nix isn't quite healthy, I worry about NT depth and how long Powe can hang on for a full game. Other than that, DE, WR, OLB, CB, RB, Interior OL - I like the depth at those positions...honest analysis.
5:00
Comment From AJ
If Keenum complete 100% of his passes while throwing for over 100 yards and 2 or 3 TDs, will he be given a chance with the starters?
5:02
John Harris:
I don't think "a game/one game" will impact the decision at all. Had he been perfect in multiple practices and then in the games, perhaps, but BOB has looked at every single rep that goes into the decision. Now, if he completes 8 of 8 tonight and a pair of TD, he'll solidify the 2nd spot, I'd imagine. But, in totality, practices, games, etc...14's been more consistently effective.
5:02
Comment From Guest
How much of the db roster depends on tonight's performance ?
5:03
John Harris:
Great question...I do believe there are a couple of DBs playing tonight for roster spots. Everything they've done leads to a decision but it's close so the game tonight could be the separator.
5:03
Comment From Guest
Coach said he would game plan for Denver, is this more for the coaches or players?
5:03
John Harris:
Both, to be honest. It's really the first time players will see how BOB and the staff plan for an opponent and vice versa. I think it's good work on both sides.
5:04
Comment From Guest
how many reps will each QB get this game?
5:05
John Harris:
Normally, the third game is when the starters go longer than in the first two games, on into the 3rd quarter. But, with all the work the Texans got in practice, I'd be surprised if they don't follow a similar plan as last week. Some guys won't play, like last week, others will get a long look that need it as they fight for a roster spot.
5:05
Comment From Edward
Buenas Tardes Juan...lol...just had a quick question about the "chippiness" this week. We have all seen different attitudes with all the players on the squad..what is your take on the new pulse of the team will it lead to uncontrollable penalties so to speak or will Bo'B have a good enough grip to have that energy channeled in a positive way throughout the season..
5:08
John Harris:
BOB has a little of that "chippiness" in him, but he'll never let it get in the way of getting work done or getting his team a 15 yard penalty. He appreciates the way different guys have to "get ready" to play. He'll only have an issue with it when it penalizes the team. But, he was never shy about talking to opponents when we played. He'll let them play, but it's truly a fine line. He'll have to work at it to make sure he knows the line doesn't get crossed. That's something he's aware of for sure.
5:08
Comment From Tyler
I love/hate how BOB is so secretive with his players injury status, is Clowney ok?
5:09
John Harris:
HA! Love/hate the way you put that. I think Clowney's okay - don't think he's going to play but he showed what he can do in the two practices before he went out. I saw him on Wednesday in the tent taking his own tape off and such so I think he'll be fine.
5:09
Comment From Guest
How many mistakes will it take for the coaches to replace fitz in the regular season?
5:10
John Harris:
Don't think there's a quantitative value on it - going to be more on feel but there are two sides to it - Fitz making mistakes (if he makes them) AND another QB being 100000% ready to roll w/the offense at that time.
5:10
Comment From Nate
With you mentioning Tarp and Mohamed behind Tuggle, I have to ask, Do you think Max Bullough can make the 53 man roster? Not sure he'll survive on the PS.
5:11
John Harris:
Here's the thing, I look at Mohamed and Tarp as similar so maybe one makes it and one doesn't. Then Max makes it - I'm with you on the Max thing - I don't think he gets through waivers at all. But, then again, 32 teams passed on him for 256 picks in May. I just think it's a bit risky, to be honest.
5:11
Comment From Alex
Shouldn't Clemons be the starting FS over lewis since Clemons is the better player. Or is Lewis' familiarity with RAC that important?
5:13
John Harris:
How and why would you say Clemons is better player? I wouldn't make that definitive statement. Lewis has been better during TC but it may be because he knows the scheme the way he does. I like what Lewis has done but the thing is both will need to play because of the amount of sub-package looks they'll play.
5:13
Comment From Robert G
What do you expect to see from fitzmagic tonight
5:15
John Harris:
I WANT to see more consistency in the passing game when not in the 2-minute drill. He's just so much more comfortable in the up-tempo (and that's a good thing, honestly) than he is in huddle situations. Want to see him settle in and rock it on a couple of drives tonight and then give it to Case and Tom.
5:15
Comment From Keith H
John, I love your work. I look forward to your write-ups everyday. What position will be the deepest come Week 1 and what position will be the hardest to filter through at cut time for the 53 man roster?
5:16
John Harris:
Thanks Keith...I've said for a while that the DE position is loaded - Watt, Jamison, Pagan, Crick, Mathews, at a minimum - that rotation is strong and it shows w/the way the interior is stopping the run the first two weeks.
5:17
Comment From Guest
Watt is listed as RE and Clowney is ROLB. Yes that's the scariest side of defense in the nfl but why not keep jj at LE to even out?
5:18
John Harris:
Honestly, I wouldn't put ANY stock in the right/left alignment or what the starting lineup says...trust me, opposing coaches won't. They'll need to prepare for them at every spot along the line, except for over the nose...well, except over the nose for now.
5:18
Comment From Guest
who do you think will be a surprise to make the team?
5:20
John Harris:
JJ Watt...nah, of course, I'm kidding - I'll say Jason Ankrah, OLB - he's steadily gotten better, although the logjam at ILB may hurt his chances. Not sure, but there probably weren't many that thought he was going to make the team back in May.
5:20
Comment From Nick
With the experimenting of Brooks Reed at ILB in OTA's, mini-camp, etc., why do you think we are only seeing him exclusively on the outside in training camp and preseason?
5:21
John Harris:
Clowney's rehab from injury, Mercilus inconsistency and the play of other ILB - think it all has played a role in his exclusive play at OLB in TC
5:21
Comment From Mark L
Which side, defense or offense, will have a bigger impact this year for the Texans?
5:21
John Harris:
Until the bye week, at a minimum - the defense. Offensive installation takes a while, especially with a complex scheme like BOB's.
5:22
Comment From Cody
What can we expect from Arian Foster tonight?
5:22
John Harris:
He should get a few runs to take some hits and then that's that. I wouldn't expect more than that, to be honest.
5:22
Comment From jp
Do you think our defense can stop manning and Fitzpatrick stepping up his game for today proving he can manage the regular season or will he bust like we all think he will
5:24
John Harris:
Don't know how much 18 will play tonight, given all the reps he got v. Texans D this week in practice. But, look, he's carved up defenses for 17 years, it's not going to shock me regardless. The Texans defense made him uncomfortable in 11-on-11 drills this week more than i expected so we'll see how much that translates. I'm not going to panic/get excited because I saw both good and bad during the week from that D v. 18 and company.
5:25
Comment From Lamont
Johnny this is LM, would it be more beneficial for Offenses to go Wide Splits against JJ Watt and Clowney similar to what Leach use to do at tech. Or will that get exploited on the NFL level. Just asking
5:28
John Harris:
I don't know that I'd want wide splits with those two because then each has a two way go and a ton of room to work. Other thing is that wide splits will invite blitzes, which I'm all in favor of with this front seven. Now, in the quick passing game? Sure, I'd think about it because I'm throwing it right now. The one thing Leach wanted was a throwing lane and he wanted the ball gone NOW. But, if a team is more 5-step/7-step oriented, I don't want 90 and 99 w/space to work against slow OL.
5:28
Comment From Robert G
What're keenums chances of getting cut next week if he under performs?
5:29
John Harris:
Good question...Savage would have to just absolutely kill it tonight and next week to force a move like that. I don't see it happening, but I don't rule anything out this year.
5:29
Comment From Chans
Watt is listed as RE and clowney as ROLB. Yes that's the scariest side of defense in the NFL, but what about our left side? Why not keep JJ at LE to even out? Thanks!
5:29
John Harris:
As I said earlier, don't put any stock in the left/right side stuff. It won't matter at all during games.
5:29
Comment From Michael
Which DL do you see making the 53?
5:30
John Harris:
NT - Powe, Nix DE - Watt, Mathews, Crick, Jamison, Pagan
5:30
Comment From Daniel
Thanks for all your insight! Want to know how a defense can stop today's offenses with the increased penalties. Especially the Texans defense.
5:31
John Harris:
Thanks so much, Daniel. It's going to be imperative to get that jam w/in the five yards and disrupt routes early. If not...you're going to be in trouble. It'll even out in the passing game, I think
5:31
Comment From Chans
Anyway to watch the texans regular season in Arkansas besides direct tv?
5:32
John Harris:
I'm not sure if we have an affiliate up there - you can get the NFL PS Live package and watch it there. I haven't watched a live game on it, but I watch all the replays there.
5:32
Comment From Guest
Hi John, I don't want to sound too simplistic when I say this but it appears to me that the new unpredictable system installed on both sides of the ball along with hard nosed coaching were the missing pieces. I know everyone is wiggin out over Fitz but as long as he can dump 5-10 yarders and a bomb throw every now and then I think we'll be fine. It seems their "swagger/attitude" this year is different already from last year. Teams could PREDICT darn near every play before the snap on both sides of the ball on the Texans. Can't do that anymore it appears. Your thoughts?? D =)
5:33
John Harris:
I think you hit on a number of things that were important to hiring BOB...and those things are hugely important going forward. We'll see how this team adapts to multiple game plan changes week-to-week but if they quickly adapt...look out.
5:33
Comment From Tyler
Is alfred blue a late round gem?
5:34
John Harris:
Think about it this way...Matt Schaub was traded in essence for Alfred Blue. I totally think Blue is a steal. With Foster healthy, hard to know how many touches he gets, but this staff likes what it sees in 44.
5:34
Comment From Saad
what was the reason behind such poor performance in the first pre season game and great in the second for the defense.
5:36
John Harris:
Honestly, guys just not doing what they were coached to do. Nerves, maybe. Losing their heads. Tight. A combination of all the above. The Cardinals are a good football team. It'll be a mystery for a long time, but we've all been there when it just goes wrong. There's no answer for it. Case in point, when I was in HS, we lost to our biggest rival 80-49 - it was a team we played six times in two years prior to that one and all the games were close. For some reason, everything that could go wrong did and that happened. No true explanation - it just happens sometimes.
5:37
Comment From Nick
How do you feel about Kendrick Lewis' leadership at FS?
5:37
John Harris:
I feel good with him back there but the leader on the defense is Cushing and DJ is asserting himself more and more in the secondary.
5:37
Comment From Daniel
Will Bullough make the team with a solid performance tonight?
5:38
John Harris:
Won't guarantee a spot, but his continued ascent is necessary for sure.
5:38
Comment From Ian "The Gray" Wulf
Are you sure about OLB and CB? Besides Clowney, who's health might be a concern (key word 'might'), Mercilus hasn't shown much so far to be excited about (not that I've seen anytway) and the other OLB's who have flashed have not done so consistently. Behind J Jo and Kareem I'm not particularly excited about CB depth. The backups might have made a few breakups here and there, but they also get burned pretty bad by good wide and slot receivers and they seem to get lost in space. Even without the whole 'fagaggedon' thing going on in the NFL for defensive holding, etc, the CB play still concerns me.
5:41
John Harris:
I'm sure about death and taxes. That's all. But, I like the OLB beyond Clowney - Reed isn't flashy but does what he's coached to do and does the little things well. Ankrah has come a long way. Groves has been really good in TC since they signed him. Mercilus has been much, MUCH better the past two weeks, more violent. CB? Look, no team in the league has two stars at CB for the most part - the Texans have two solid, when 100% healthy, corners. Bouye, Hal and Mack have been good and improving. I like the way it's all progressed. But, again, am I sure of anything? Death and taxes, my man.
5:41
Comment From carlos from San Diego
With the first round of cuts league wide who should the Texans look at picking up since we will have first pick at them. The Seahawks are deep at safeties and 49ners are at LB.
5:42
John Harris:
I think it's all in play, to be honest - 465 guys will get released/waived by Tuesday - there might be a player or two there - don't care the position but this personnel staff will ALWAYS be looking.
5:42
Comment From RZ
Has Fitzpatrick really gotten more consistent?
5:43
John Harris:
More consistent than any of the other QB BY FAR. But, that said, I've said many times that he needs to be better outside the two minute drill. Then again, he hasn't had 80 for much of TC, that can hurt that too.
5:43
Comment From Daniel
Do we keep 2 or 3 QB's in your opinion as of now?
5:44
John Harris:
I'd lean 3 at this point but Savage's performance could change things. But, even if he plays well, I still think 7 will be here, hence 3 QB
5:44
Comment From Daniel
Can you tell me why Brandon Harris is still on this team? I want him to play like a 2nd round pick but surely he could be gone if he can't stop getting beat
5:44
John Harris:
I think your concern is valid.
