The John Lucas Foundation (JLF), led by former NBA coach and player, John Lucas, hosted a successful golf tournament, Friday, November 14, 2014, at Memorial Park Golf Course, despite the frigid weather. This was a rescheduled date and 68 golfers participated. The event raised money for JLF’s Basketball and Beyond partnership with the Houston Parks and Recreation Department designed to revitalize basketball in the community.
“This partnership will also help at risk former athletes and young athletes with various wellness issues, and be an avenue for college scholarships through exposure at basketball camps,” Lucas said. “The goal is to help kids become better people; better student athletes; provide an alternative chance for them to succeed once basketball is over and use basketball as a vehicle.” JLF’s next event is the Fonde Hall of Fame games, January 3-4, 2015.
NBA Hall of Famers Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Clyde Drexler, and Moses Malone were among the celebrity golfers. ‘Dr. J’ joined former Rockets guard, Vernon Maxwell, as co-chairs of the event. Other golfers included former Harlem Globetrotters, Reggie Dixon and Sweet Lou Dunbar; retired NBA players Major Jones, Rex Chapman, Ricky Pierce, and Chris Morris.
Maxwell knows first hand how the support JLF provides impacts lives. It is work Lucas has been doing long before he started the Foundation. “John has been like a father figure to me since I came to Houston in 1989.” He’s done so much for me on and off the court. He would talk to me and take my calls when no one else would.” Dr. J adds “John can’t do it alone, he needs an assist just like he dished out when he played. So I’m glad to be here and help with such a worthy cause.”
The John Lucas Foundation supports athletes in need of after care or wellness services and programs. JLF has successfully provided rehabilitative work for more than 25 years with professional athletes, celebrities, public figures, and others struggling with substance abuse or other life challenges.
