RANKING FACEBOOK "GROUP PAGES" - CRAIG SHELTON -3/31/2015

RANKING FACEBOOK "GROUP PAGES"

Over the past two years, I've been closely monitoring activity among "group pages" on Facebook, in particular sports and entertainment group pages.

Even though there are a variety of social group pages operating in the social sphere, it appears that the formats generating the highest level of continuity among participants and consistency in activity are sports and entertainment related social group pages.

As it is in every facet of life or competitive endeavors, the superficial eye places too high of a value on quantity over quality. The number of members or the volume of traffic inside of a group should not, and does not warrant acquittal under my criteria for ranking group pages.

I look at presentation in how the group page is established via its presentation.

I look at how said group is managed, as well as overall content and intellectual value of dialogue among its membership participants.

Let's be honest, there's a great deal of nonsense, tom-foolery, and flat out garbage in operation on Facebook within its social group pages.

Many group pages have become a place for adults to behave like children.

Many group pages have become a place for men to speak belligerently to each other and to women, as though they were raised by heathens.

Mini group pages have become platforms for individuals to display some oral level of power that they'd clearly never enjoy in the real world. We like to call them "Group Police" or "Group Cops."

Nevertheless, I made a valid, sincere and honest attempt to not judge group pages on the gross behavior of the minority, in favor of looking at the overall positive informational culture established inside each group.

With thousands of existing Sports and Entertainment group pages in existence on Facebook, I was able to filter down my listing to group pages operating heavily with a Houston base in its membership profile.

THE RANKING OF TOP 10 SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT FACEBOOK GROUP PAGES:

10. UNDERGROUND RAP STARS - (1,127 MEMBERS)

9. 10,000,000 CHRISTIAN LEADERS AND BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS - (19,950 MEMBERS)

6. RED NATION: ROCKETS FANS GROUP - (10,267 MEMBERS)

5. REAL DEAL SPORTS TALK - (3,369 MEMBERS)

4. 40 AND UP....REAL HOT TOPICS - (9,197 MEMBERS)

1. 40 PLUS REAL HOT TOPICS - (9,078 MEMBERS)

COMMENTARY:

Group administrators should spend less time whining and policing content per their group title, and spend more time filtering out individuals who use vulgarity and unnecessarily disrespectful language towards other group members, simply because of a difference of opinion.

In my opinion, group pages are the best thing that has ever happened to Facebook users.  Group pages provide platforms for content-specific discussions in concentrated forums. But let's not get carried away with ourselves. To make a stink over a particular post because it's newsworthy, but posted in a Sports Group, or it's a socially relevant sports topic, posted in an Entertainment Group, is LAME!

IT'S FOR LOSERS!

Spammy sunglass and vitamin supplement posts are annoyingly troublesome and should not be tolerated by group administrators.

As long as group members are posting content in a tasteful, intelligent fashion, there's absolutely no cause for alarm.

Outside of that, you people need to just lighten up and have some fun!

It's "Facebook!"

It's a "group page!"

Stop stunt'n...it's not, and you're not that important.
