MAKE UP YOUR OWN CAPTION FOR THIS ONE!

FLUB OF THE DAY!

On Friday afternoon (10/8), Charlie Pallilo (Sports Talk 790, 3-7 PM daily) gave out some bum info when he was talking about NFL players who didn’t make it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

He said that ten-time Pro Bowler, Tom Mack, was not in the Hall of Fame. Actually, Mack, an offensive guard for the LA Rams from 1966-78 was an eleven-time Pro-Bowler who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.

And during Sunday’s Giants-Texans game, Texans' radio voice, Marc Vandermeer, did not once confuse Eli Manning with his brother, Peyton, as we might have expected. However, in the post-game wrap, he finally referred to the Giants QB as Peyton Manning.

HE TOLD ME ........!

In watching ESPN’s Rachel Nichols over and over again, I  noticed that she often puts things in the first person. For instance, if a coach/athlete says something in front of a group of reporters, she will say that “Mr. X told me so-and-so…”.

My buddy, Phil Mushnick, of the NY Post told me that if Rachel was at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, when Lou Gehrig made his farewell speech, she would have reported the following that night on ESPN SportsCenter: “And Lou told me that although he got a bad break, he considers himself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. This is Rachel Nichols, ESPN.”

HERE'S PROOF THAT THE MINNESOTA TWINS' BEAR MASCOT SH*TS IN THE WOODS!

YOU HAVE TO CRAWL BEFORE YOU WALK, BUT WHY ON THE BOTTOM OF MY TV SCREEN!

Another one of my pet peeves is those annoying little sports or news tickers that “crawl” or slide by at the bottom of the screen, presenting a parade of headlines. Why can’t each headline be shown in its entirety in a box? In that way, they’re not so annoying because they don’t slide. Instead, each headline appears, in its entirety, in that same bottom-of-the-screen strip and lingers for a few moments. This is so much better than the sliding headlines of ESPN and Fox.

First of all, it’s far less distracting. Without that crawl competing for your attention, you can settle in to focus on the element you want - either the video or the headline box without the two competing visuals.

Second, you can read at your own pace. You can read the complete headline, then look back at the video, if you like. It’s not like the ESPN/Fox variety, where you’re held hostage by the speed of the text, which is obviously geared to the slowest reading speed.

I can’t actually think of one way that the crawl is better than the simpler, less distracting, more considerate boxed headline way. Maybe one day, ESPN/Fox will wise up.

PATERNO COULD FINALLY BE HISTORY AT PSU!

As mentioned here before the start of the season, the Peanut Gallery suggested that this might be Joe Paterno’s last season at Penn State, if the Nittany Lions didn’t win seven or more games.

This past Saturday may have been the beginning of the end for 83-year-old Joe Pa. His boys lost at home to Illinois by 20 points, 33-13. To add insult to injury, it was the first time ever that the Fighting Illini won at Penn State in seven games, but worse than that, it was the annual Homecoming Game that is supposed to be an automatic win for the homecoming alumni.

Coming off two consecutive 11-2 seasons, PSU is now 3-3 (0-2 in the Big 10) and is not in the Top 25 (aka “unranked”) with the three wins coming against relative patsies Youngstown State, Kent State, and Temple; the first two of which got paid over $1 million combined to come to town to lose to the boys of Nittany.

This is Joe’s 45th year at Penn State and he still has games left with Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio State, and Michigan State, so a losing season could be on the horizon, which would be the fifth in the last eleven seasons for Joe and PSU.

In Marc's defense, the Texans sure made him look like Peyton out there. I had to look real hard during close ups to make sure Peyton and Eli didn't switch places for a day.
