Landry Locker and Paul Gallant show to Josh Innes love and discuss Houston Radio Industry

Written By: Lamont

Houston weekend radio is so dead and sporadic, I've started collecting podcasts to listen to on the weekends.

I came across Sports Radio 610's Paul Gallant and Landry Locker's podcast Cool Your Takes.  It's a real podcast (not a terrestrial radio show pimped as a Podcast) and appears to be independent of SR610.  I cannot lie, I like the cast because they relax the language.  Yes, Lamont likes his language raw or as close as you can get to it.

I was listening to their last episode and near the ending, they touched on a few local sports radio topics.

Landry Locker salutes Josh Innes

Unless you have been living under a rock, Sports Radio 610 and Josh Innes are at odds.  Sports Radio 610's Landry Locker mixed it up with Josh on Super Bowl Radio Row.  Landry dislikes the way Josh lies and flip flops between sports teams.  What's odd, Paul Gallant and Josh are cool as he is with Landry.  Paul tries to remain neutral but he will elaborate on shit if he feels its right or wrong.

As I listened, I was shocked to hear Landry showing love to Josh in the way he Live His Show. He believes Josh is 100% dedicated to his show.  In today's political and social climate, it's rare a person can praise an element of their enemy or competition.

John and Lance Longevity

Landry and Paul transitioned to why John Granato and Lance Zierlein are beloved locally.  Both seem to believe it's John and Lance's longevity and totally debunk the notion of disorganized.

I agree with them throwing out the belief people like John and Lance because they are unorganized.  However I believe their longevity point is incomplete an do not go far enough.  John and Lance enjoys the longevity but they also embrace Houston.  They do the hoakie shit like Houston vs Dallas, Houston vs San Antonio; homer fans like that shit.  They have a real connection with their fanbase.  I've said in the past, John and Lance has one of the most intimate audience's in Houston.  Their fans feel like they are a part of the show.

Lastly, for the longest, Lance was the only "goto" person in Houston radio for a long time if you wanted in depth breakdowns in basketball and football.

It's very similar to Rich Lord, Charlie Pallilo and John McClain.  Fans love Rich and John because they been in Houston a while and they go balls in with the Houston Sports History shit.

Ratings Bragging

Paul and Landry warned about the bragging on ratings.  They pretty much said shit that I've heard a million times, the system is flawed.  I'm not hammering them on that but they did include a nugget that made me think.  Landry highlighted the point that Josh was getting the ratings during a down period.  I don't feel it was a stab at Josh just the reality.  It gave me a window into how industry possibly assess shit.  In my brain, if a person is pulling in the dry months, I would think that trend would continue in the busy months. But Landry's take made me remember Greg Koch and ND Kalu a few years ago.  I can remember Greg and ND were killing in the NFL Offseason but as soon as the NFL season began, they came back to the pack in a major way.

I loved the take.

If you are in the wilderness of Sports Talk Radio, I'd recommend Cool Your Takes.   The guys seem to have an balance of
  • Sports to Social Topics
  • Chemistry is nice
  • Topics and takes are nice and concise
  • Language
On the show, both guys come off as cats you wouldn't mind drinking a beer with and bullshitting around.  They keep it fun without a stick up their ass.
