COMMENTS FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY!

97.5 FM TO THE OTHERS: WE'RE NUMBER ONE FOR JULY!

David Barron of the Houston Chronicle (August 13) reports that KFNC led in the July Arbitron ratings in every part of the day among men aged 25-54.

KFNC (97.5 FM) led by .6 of a share point over KILT (SR 610) in morning drive, by .5 of a share point at middays, and by .3 of a share point in afternoon drive.

As in June, KFNC greatly benefited from the World Cup broadcasts during the early part of July.

In each of the three day parts, SR610 was second, KBME (Sports Talk 790) was third and KGOW (1560 THEGAME) was dead last among the local sports talk stations.

The four stations combined for a weak 3.8 share for the month and for a 5.9 share in morning drive.

In persons 12-plus, the only demo in which Arbitron allows numbers to be cited in print, SR610 had a 0.9 share and 182,200 weekly cumulative listeners. KFNC had a 0.8 and 133,000. Sports Talk 790 had 0.4 and 130,000, and KGOW 1560 had a 0.1 share and 39,400 cumulative listeners.

For comparative purposes, KODA (99.1 FM) had a 7.0 share and KTBZ (94.5 FM) had a 6.4 share and both were among six local stations with more than a million weekly listeners.

CHICAGO BULL??? OR "NEVER SAY NEVER"

Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, a Chicago native, told probasektballtalk.com (NBC Sports) that he’s "never" leaving the Windy City.

That’s exactly what Walter O’Malley told us Brooklyn Dodger fans about leaving Brooklyn after the Dodgers won their first World Series back in 1955. For the sports-history-challenged, the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958.

Rose should cover himself by saying he won’t leave as long as he gets the support he needs to win. Or to be real honest, he should say he’s not leaving Chicago until LeBron James tells him when to leave.

CALL ME ELDRICK!

Tiger Woods didn’t win at Firestone Golf Club (Akron, OH) last weekend, a course he knows better than his own driveway - much better – as he won Firestone seven out of eleven times now. If he can’t win there, then where does he win this year?

I suggest that he be called "Eldrick" until he finally wins a tournament because he definitely isn't playing like a Tiger.

FLUBS OF THE DAY!

I spent 15 minutes listening to the Mighty Gwinn on Sports Talk 790 on Thursday (8/12). I put on the show at 11:45 AM because a friend was on hold. About 10 minutes later, a caller brought up the story of Bobby Tolan Jr. who is trying to make a comeback in the minors after being shot by a Bellaire policeman allegedly investigating reports of a stolen car after a confrontation in the Tolan driveway in December 2008. Tolan, the son of a former major leaguer, was unarmed and driving his own vehicle. The bullet lodged in Tolan's liver; the injury could have ended his professional baseball career. The officer was exonerated in the trial for aggravated assault.

What surprised me was that Mighty was not familiar with the story. Even my 95-year old Aunt Rose who lives in Queens, NY, knows the story because it made national headlines as an alleged racial incident. Luckily for Mighty, Matt Thomas was in studio getting ready for his show to fill in some of the details.

Later in the day, I was switching between stations when I heard Charlie Pallilo talking about the top third basemen of all time, so I tuned in for a while because it looked like a "stat geek" may be needed. In between third basemen calls, Charlie mentioned that Thursday was the last day to register for the Houston Marathon (please check out last week's blog entitled, "THANKS A LOT, HOUSTON MARATHON!  http://sheltonmedia.blogspot.com/2010/08/thanks-lot-houston-marathon-mike-in-da.html.)  Before my body fell to pieces, I used to run marathon races in New York and although I never measured the actual length, it’s supposed to be 26 miles and 385 yards. Charlie tried to shortchange the runners by 100 yards when he said it was 26 Miles and 285 yards.

Next, Charlie mentioned Pie Traynor who played his entire career for the Pirates, as one of the third basemen who was in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Charlie said that Pie and Honus Wagner (pictured above) who also played for the Pirates made up one of the best left sides of the infield. The only thing is that Wagner was playing in the majors before Traynor was born. They were born 25 years apart. Wagner played for the Pirates from 1900-1917 after playing three seasons for Louisville. Traynor played for the Pirates from 1920-1937, so they never teamed up. Charlie rarely screws up on that level.  Next thing you know, he'll say Jackie Robinson played for the one-time Brooklyn Dodger minor league team, the Montreal Monarchs

And then Charlie started talking about the Negro League third basemen in the Hall of Fame, as though he was on expert on them, saying Jud Wilson was a better third baseman than Ray Dandridge (pictured). Huh!

And Charlie, please don’t talk over me when I am bringing solid information to your show. You have four hours to talk. I only have a few minutes at best.

THOMAS IS IN, THEN HE'S OUT!

As mentioned here yesterday, there’s great news for women employees of the New York Knickerbockers, who are pinching themselves in the rear end that Isiah Thomas' deal to work as a Knicks' consultant was disallowed by the NBA. The sexual harasser took the news all right, but word on the street is that he’s now looking to find compromising photos of NBA Commissioner David Stern to go along with his scrapbook collection of Knick owner, Jim Dolan.

Isiah has done very little since his playing days with the Detroit Pistons that can be considered a success. His previous stint with the Knicks included making dumb trades, signing okay - but not great -players to expensive long-term contracts, chasing Larry Brown out of town, taking over as coach of a Knick team that underachieved, and then the piece-de-resistance is when he sexually harassed a Knicks’ employee, which cost the team $11.6M and Thomas his job.

Since leaving the Knicks, Thomas has taken Florida International University to new heights as the head-coach there in his first season with a 7-25 (4-14 in Sun Belt Conference) record last season.

If Thomas was allowed to return to the Knicks, I wonder if Stephon Marbury, Vin Baker, and Jerome James would be contacted to see if they are available for playing duty. Unfortunately, Tracy McGrady is no longer available. He just signed with the Detroit Pistons.

"MEA CULPA" SAYS REF

NFL official, Bill Leavy, last weekend said that he blew two calls in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl XL 21-10 loss to the Steelers in 2006. Leavy says that he has had sleepless nights over these two botched calls and that he will “go to my grave wishing I’d been better”.

Leavy made his first appearance in Seattle since Super Bowl 40 (for the Roman-numeral challenged). In a media session, Leavy, unexpectedly and unprompted, bared his soul, saying, “I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game.”

This "mea culpa" may have helped to ease Leavy's burden, but it has reopened deep wounds among Seahawks fans and those who lost money on the Seahawks like me.

People in the counseling business will tell you that the admission of one’s errors is a crucial early step in becoming a better person and uniting spiritually with God. Therefore, we should give Leavy the time to admit his mistakes and clear his soul. His honesty on the subject is refreshing in these days when no one seems to take responsibility for screwing up.

Having said that, Leavy’s admission changes nothing. The Steelers’ are still Lombardi Trophy winners for SB40; no Steeler with a bonus clause in his contract for winning the Super Bowl that year will have to refund the money to the Rooneys; and my bookie still has my $2,200 that I lost while getting 4.5 with the Seahawks.

KUDOS TO SR610 AND WESTWOOD ONE!

Last Sunday night (8/8), SportsRadio610 broadcast its first Westwood One NFL game this season. It was the NFL Hall of Fame Game between Dallas and Cincy. Though it was a stinker, that’s par for the course when it comes to the Hall of Fame Game.

The Westwood One games are well-produced and an enjoyable listen in the car or at work when a TV isn’t around. Hopefully, most of the games will be competitive.

One of the main purposes of a leading sports talk station is to broadcast quality live sporting events as much as possible to limit the repetitious sports talk and that is why SR610 is the “Houston Sports Leader”, as they refer to themselves, though KFNC 97.5 may not agree.

BONJOUR, MON AMI!

My friend Jack F. recently visited France and wrote this:

“Bonjour Monsieur Mike, While in Strasbourg, I found a store that sold all kinds of sports apparel and team jerseys. I couldn't find any French World Cup jerseys, so I then decided to go and look in the back of the store where there were items marked “up to 70% off”. Still no French World Cup jerseys, but there were several Cleveland Cavaliers’ jerseys with the number 23 and the name “James” across the back. Those were 70% off. There was also a Shaq jersey from his Laker days with a 70% discount. Moreover, there were three white Philadelphia Eagles jerseys with the number 81 and the name “Owens” on the back there on the rack. You know those latter jerseys must have been on sale at the discount rack for a while now.” END.

FOR RENT: A SEVEN FOOT-ONE INCH, 330 POUNDER!

Wiki says Rent-A-Center (RAC) is an American public furniture and electronics rent-to-own company traded on NASDAQ with 3,535 stores nationwide that has had its share of controversies in the past several years from sexual bias in the hiring of women to deceptive business practices to strong-arm collection tactics when going after late-paying customers. The company has its headquarters in Plano, Texas.

Shaquille O’Neal recently signed with the Celtics for next season. In effect, it is a one-year rental. Knowing that Shaq likes to lend his name to businesses for a price, I suggest that his agency contact the people in Plano who run “Rent-A-Center”? Maybe both Shaq and RAC can benefit financially from a marriage between the two.

SHAQ: I AM THE GREATEST!

Speaking of Shaq, he was quoted in an interview in the Toronto Sun recently, as follows:

“The biggest thing that will define my legacy is how I’ve done it, and what I’ve done, and who I am. I’m a weird big guy. Doing rapping, doing movies. Do a lot of stuff. But always do things the right way. Changed three different franchises around. This is a guy who they (league officials) would have secret meetings about to change the rules. So, that’s going to be my legacy: The most dominant player ever.”

That sounds like a nice sound bite for ESPN or ABC before a Celtic game next season, but if  “Big Aristotle,” “The Diesel," "Shaq Fu," "The Big Daddy,"  "Superman," "The Big Cactus," "The Big Shaqtus," "The Big Galactus," "Wilt Chamberneezy," "The Big Baryshnikov," "The Real Deal," "Dr. Shaq", or whatever the heck he’s calling himself now, really thinks deep down inside, that he is the “greatest” or the most dominant player ever in the NBA, there are some words to describe him: hallucinatory, illusional, mistaken, deceived, fraudulent, and misinformed, to just name a few.

I WANT A MAN WITH A DARK SIDE!

State Farm Insurance is currently running two commercials - one aimed at men and one aimed at women that I'm sure you've seen by now.

In the women's commercial, the car is slightly damaged, but the girl owner has no worries because all she has to do is say out loud the State Farm jingle, "Like a good neighbor - State Farm is there" and a handsome State Farm representative magically appears, just like out of an illusionist's act.

Her friends then indicate what kind of handsome rep they really want for a sexual relationship. The final choice is for a handsome rep with a dark side. But what if his dark side was really dark - a serial killer who likes to rape and mutilate bitchy girls who submit insurance claims?

THAT ANNOYING CRAWL!

For many years, the Mickey Mouse Sports Network (aka ESPN) would have us believe that there's nothing it can do about its distracting, screen-shrinking, action-hiding, ESPN-promos crawl at the bottom-of-the-screen.

According to the ESPN Sports Manual, Exec Order 13.2, Section B, Paragraphs 5 and 6, the crawl must stay up at all times going from right to left, including commercials (that’s in the fairly new Paragraph 6). Even NCAA Football and Basketball, the NFL, the NBA, and MLB games cannot make it disappear.

However, in the last month or so, the bottom crawl disappeared several times and for a few hours at a time. And just when did this happen: during ESPN's coverage of the British Open; during "Countdown to the ESPYs”; and during the "ESPY Awards."

You guessed it, the ESPYs, unlike the NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, Wimbledon and World Cup games, are too important to mess the screen up.

Now you have the proof that ESPN takes better care of its own self-made programming than live sports. It will provide a full-screen view of the ESPYs pre-show show before it will allow viewers a full view of some of the biggest sports events.

A MAGIC TRICK THAT WILL MAKE THE CRAWL DISAPPEAR!

A trick I learned from a gambling buddy of mine in order to watch a game without the annoying crawl is by taking two four-foot-plus strips of duct tape (length depends on screen width) and sticking them together, so that the non-stick sides are on the outside. You then place the strip over the crawl and you scotch tape the ends of the duct tape to the side of the TV.

It's very effective at blocking out the annoying crawl. And when the family wants to watch their show, it only takes a second to remove it and tape it to the back of the TV, where it's ready for the next time.

Thanks my man Mike, excellent article but you know I am drawn to the numbers and David Barron's article was on point. There were alot of interesting elements in David's article. First of all, I thought this time of the season was SR610 time (are we not in football season yet?) however to see 97.5 KNFC was almost as shocking to see Ralph Cooper 1430 and Barry Warner 610AM do so well amongst the younger generation.

There was one passage that stood out to me

My conversation with Cowherd, however, stemmed from my observation that after years of producing Jim Rome wannabes, a lot of Houston talk shows have hosts doing Cowherd schtick, particularly his timing and vocal cadence. Just try listening to Houston sports radio between, say, 10 and 11 a.m. It’s like hearing three Cowherds instead of one.

Ok there are only two guys I listen to during this time slot, Dylan Gwinn 790AM and Josh Innes 610AM. I can only guess the main Rome wannabees David could be referencing has to be Josh Innes which really becomes odd because I know for a fact Gavin Spittle don't like the whole Rome type of format and definately not the smack type of callers.

Let me walk the type rope here without insulting. I do not believe Josh nor Dylan sound like Rome. Actually in Dylan's case, most local callers these days are leaving 610 @ 11am to tune in to Dylan because they don't like Rome. Now if he is saying these shows try to be arrogant and condesending then maybe he has a point.

I actually feel most of the talent in Houston has a "COCKY SYNDROME". Everyone tends to act like Barry Warner and it does not work for them as well as it works for Barry.

Would have been nice of David to actually call out names.

WHY THE HELL I DIDN'T USE THIS AS AN ARTICLE. DUMBBBBBBBBBB

Mike, where do you find these photos? Is that a snap of Shaq with a guy in a very uncomfy looking position? Too Funny. Keep the Western theme snaps coming as well
