MATT SCHAUB VS. CAM NEWTON DEBATE ON 1560THEGAME

On Wednesday, June 27th, John Granato, Sean Pendergast, and Richard Justice debated Cam Newton vs. Matt Schaub on the 1560 Morning Show. The question Granato proposed was which quarterback would you prefer for one season? That one season being the upcoming 2012-2013 NFL season.

The discussion was spawned from Ron Jaworski's recent ranking of NFL quarterbacks. Jaworski ranked Newton at 15 and Schaub at 13. The argument went beyond exclusive comparisons of Newton and Schaub. References in comparison to Andy Dalton and Robert Griffin III (RG3) vs. Schaub were also addressed briefly, but the basis of the discussion embraced the Schaub vs. Newton theme.

It was a wise decision content-wise in my view in focusing on the Schaub-Newton angle. Obviously, any discussion of football in Houston that involves Matt Schaub is always a topical fallback, or guaranteed winner in my view. I felt more interaction with callers would have contributed to the overall entertainment of the conversation. I'm falling short of this observation being a complaint on any level. The conversation piece was a good listen overall, and I appreciated a national story in Jaworski's piece being spent on local content.

1560: CAM NEWTON VS MATT SCHAUB

Cam Newton vs. Matt Schaub in determining what my choice would be for one season is a no-brainer. Newton is a sick athlete and a rare passing talent with intimidating size to boot. Newton is flat out sick with it, whereas Matt Schaub has a greater likelihood to "make you sick!"

MATT SCHAUB
I'd take Cam Newton over Matt Schaub for the upcoming NFL season primarily because of his vast set of immeasurable attributes and the "it" factor. I can't get past the poise Newton exhibited throughout his NCAA Championship run at Auburn, amidst the massive national media storm of controversy that stalked him the entire season. Newton is obviously headstrong as well as strong in the head. Mental toughness permeates an NFL locker room in a positive manner and breeds success and a winning culture.

Matt Schaub is an above-average asset at quarterback, but he'll never be considered freakish or special. Under circumstances where a large dose of positive karma is in play that includes an anointed blessing from the "Good Health Gods", Matt Schaub and an elite defense can win you a Super Bowl.

Cam Newton makes his own karma and blessings.

What's up man? Newton's leaps and bounds a better athlete than Schaub. He is also probably more durable. But if you're this year's Texans, who are positioned for a championship, you would take Newton's 1 year of NFL experience over 8?

I'd take Cam.

But at the end of the day it won't matter if your O-line isn't worth two cents. It's kind of hard to throw while running for your life or while laying on your backside.
