Nick Wright does not have hair plugs

Written by: LM

I really thought this guy was out of my existence but over the last week, his hair has became a topic.  Apparently, Nick Wright is growing out his air.

The local and national media has been all over it.  Nick use to rock a bald fade and suddenly to see him with hair is a shock to the system for some white people.

This whole story of Nick Wright's hair further explains that most of the media are out of the loop.

Nick is a white young male who think he's black, When the dude was in Houston he would hold up his black wife as a trophy while telling Houston where she worked while she was pregnant.  His whole MO was proving how black he was and how white you are.

Nick use to wear bald fade, that's what we normally seen him rocking.

Sometimes we just called it a low cut.   Nick is not losing his hair or has a receding hairline or any of that.   He was rocking a style blacks normally wore.

NEW HAIR NICK

If i had to bet money, Nick is growing out his hair for Dred Locks or an Afro.  This dude will do whatever it takes to appear black.  He probably has on some Jordans right now and if he wasn't on TV, he would probably have THUG LIFE tatted on him.

Bottom line, the dude does not have hair plugs or a hair piece.  Fuck around and by Thanksgiving, Nick will have a flat top.

RATINGS LEADER, IN THE LOOP vs THE LANCE ZIERLEIN SHOW BY LM

RATINGS LEADER, IN THE LOOP vs THE LANCE ZIERLEIN SHOW
BY: LM
5.5.2014

After the Houston Rockets loss to the Portland Trailblazers, I needed something to cheer me up.  therefore I ventured to the HMW BEEF PAGE (local audio squabbles) to listen to a few local audio spats.  Low and behold, I came across Nick Wright v Lance Zierlein.  I clicked play and wow what a difference a year makes or 15 months to be exact.

In the audio, you will hear Nick Wright going on about ratings and how no one wants to hear Lance's brand of "sports talk".  Nick was  beating his chest about the greatness of Sports Radio 610.   I do not expect Lance Zierlein to comment because he an Nick "squashed the beef" but it is strange to hear Nick brag a year ago.

Nick's audio was right after the 2012 Texans Season (12-4).  In other words, when the Texans were doing good, all of Sports Radio 610 and other stations were doing good in ratings.  I even tried to make the case, maybe just maybe Sports Radio 610 ratings are not correlated with the Texans, but its clear, ratings are. Someone can easily counter with Sports Talk 790 and the Rockets.  The Lance Zierlein Show starting kicking In The Loop's ass after the football season with a heavy dosage of Rockets.

As previously stated, its old news but when I heard Nick's audio and watching how the ratings are shaping up now, it makes me chuckle.

Below are the ratings for March

IS NICK WRIGHT READY TO BE THE FACE OF THE FRANCHISE - LM

IS NICK WRIGHT READY TO BE THE FACE OF THE FRANCHISE
Written By: LM
1.19.2014

Over the last three years, Josh Innes has been the face of Sports Radio 610.   Like him or hate him, for the last few years, if you said Sports Radio 610, Josh Innes was the name likely to come from your mouth.  It's no different on other stations, when you think:
  • Sports Talk 790, you think Lance Zierlein
  • 1560 The Game John Granato
  •  97.5 ESPN Fred Faour/ AJ Hoffman
Once Nick Wright arrived in Houston, Sports Radio 610 encountered a situation.  Two young radio professionals from different backgrounds trying to establish their dominance.  Don't let the on-air friendships fool you, every personality wants to be THAT GUY.   That guy, the moment you say a station's name, they want to be recognized as the Alpha Dog.

Josh Innes is self taught while Nick Wright is Syracuse educated.

It's funny how things happen because I remember last year  HMW Founder Craig Shelton told Josh that he and Nick wouldn't be able to coexist at 610.   Audio is Below

Craig talks to Josh Innes

Some may disagree and call Rich Lord the Face of 610 but this has nothing to do with tenure and longevity and every thing to do with association.

It appears, Nick Wright may have got what he wanted as being the top dog but is he ready?  Currently, Nick is one of the most identifiable names at Sports Radio 610 but it's a constellation prize.  Sports Radio 610 is no where near as hot as it was a couple of years ago.   Would you want to be the "hot guy" on a bland product or a "hot guy" on a gold mine?

Here is the deal, Josh Innes was part of the build of record ratings, Nick Wright was not. Not to mention we have seen the morning fall below 2.0 in ratings which is something we have not seen in a while at 610.   Both are polarizing  personalities but for me, Nick does not have that "I have to hear what he says next" pop.

Can Nick Wright push 610 higher?  Just some food for thought.   For what it's worth, I think Seth Payne is Sports Radio 610's best host but Nick Wright is clearly the face.

STATEMENTS: LANCE ZIERLEIN & NICK WRIGHT - LM

CLEARING THE AIR
Written by: LM, Lance Zierlein, Nick Wright
2-26-2013

Initially, I had planned on writing a little more commentary but Lance Zierlein and Nick Wright delivered in a huge way.

After Friday's dust up, I contacted both guys to get a statement and they replied.  I believe Nick and Lance's fans will get more clarity to what's going on in the market and how things materialized.  If you are unclear how all of this came about, you can read Part One with Audio Included.  PART ONE

LANCE ZIERLEIN

I got up to host a Texans Google Hangout with Drew Dougherty and Nick Scurfield live from the combine and when I turned on my TweetDeck, I had messages about Nick going after me regarding my Top Prospects post (either in Houston Chronicle or on TheSidelineView.com).  I didn't get to hear any of it because I was busy, but quite frankly, I don't care what was said.

He can stick to his "ratings" schtick if he wants to and that is fine, but he should leave my football stuff alone.  I've learned to evaluate from coaches scouts and even a general manager (Jerry Angelo) over the years and I put in quite a bit of work each year on my draft study going to the Shrine Game practices, Senior Bowl practices and usually the combine.  I will have as valid if not more valid evaluation of draft prospects than most of the draft guests he'll have on his show.

I've moved on from being "radio host" like he is.  That's his entire world.  He lives for the ratings each month and that's fine.  I've never been into the ratings even over the 13 years I've been #1 including at three different stations.  I care about revenue coming in from the show (because then I get paid) and if people really like the show and vibe to it when I catch up with the listeners.  That's what matters most.

I love to compete against those guys and I want to win, but my world revolves around more than just radio now and it has for about five years now.  Football writing and evaluation is just as big a part of what I do now as radio and I expect to be working full-time in the football arena at some point in the future.  Going after me personally about my football acumen seems kind of silly to me based on his background.

He is fake wrestling guy who likes to create "radio beef" because he thinks it is good radio.  Cool.  That's too TMZ for my tastes.  Acting cool with me at the Super Bowl and then trying to blast me three weeks later just feels too contrived.  I don't hate the guy or his talent.  I just think he's a one way talent who does radio and that's it.  I used to used to ball like that, now we own the ball team, holla back, now I got black cards, good credit and such Baby boy cause I'm all grown up.
 (shout-out to Hova

NICK WRIGHT

Here you go, Lamont:

"Here's how it all went down: I follow @smartfootball on Twitter. Last week he RTed something Lance had written, which said, " After finally finishing tape study, my Top 50 draft prospects for 2012..."  I found this to be particularly hilarious, because I can't imagine having the time, resources or energy to find enough tape on enough college football players to feel like I could claim to have "finished tape study" and release a top FIFTY players for the upcoming draft. I mean, Eric Fisher, a tackle from Central Michigan, was rated the #3 player according to Lance. And maybe I'm wrong, but does anyone really think Lance acquired Central Michigan's All-22 film from UCM's October 20th game vs Ball St. and is "studying the tape." Or what about players 45, 46 and 47, three guys from La Tech, Marshall and Florida International, respectively? Is this "tape" really being broken down? Maybe it is. Either way, to me, it was a hilarious concept. Either a guy who really is spending his time finding enough actual tape to truly and fairly evaluate the entire draft pool to rank a top 50, or a guy who wanted people to think he had. Whatever it was, to me, it was a funny couple minutes of radio.

Before the next segment had even began, Lance was tweeting to me, as you chronicled. He was either listening (thanks!) or had someone alert him of the slight IMMEDIATELY, because his response was swift and I got tweets from him about it before I got tweets from anyone else. And that's cool. I took a shot, so he took some shots back. That's all good. I've talked with Lance face-to-face, and when I saw him at the Super Bowl the first thing I said to him was that I was glad that he "got it." Meaning, that he understood that it's never personal, it's always in good fun, and, if I may invoke the great Omar Little, it's all in the game.

But then, things took an unexpected turn. All of a sudden, the discussion on Twitter was as if I had questioned whether or not Lance knows football. I hadn't. Yes, I had insinuated his film study might not be getting him any NFL GM jobs anytime soon, but I never doubted the man's knowledge of the game. Despite that, however, Lance was challenging me to... well, what the hell was he challenging me to? He wanted us to watch a game together and video tape the experience? Sounds incredibly exciting. And for what purpose? To prove to a minute audience that Lance can better diagnose how to pick up a zone blitz than me? I declined because that's a battle I have no interest in fighting, or winning, for that matter. Maybe to some radio is about proving how smart you are or how much you know, but that isn't what it's about to me. To me radio is about providing a product that people enjoy. And winning. Yes, radio, to me, is definitely about winning vs. the competition in the market.

Finally, and not unexpectedly, the conversation turned to ratings and the same old stuff about the Texans being to thank for the ratings and this myth that 610's current success is thanks to the great Lance, and that's what inspired my 5 or so minutes that you sampled on HMW, so allow me to explain those thoughts a little bit here.

Yes, I understand that 610 is currently at a competitive advantage because we have the Texans. Yes, I understand 610 is the "heritage" sports station in town, and has traditionally--almost irrelevant of the hosts--held down the #1 spot among the sports stations. However, that misses the point entirely, because, quite simply, all #1s are not created equal.  Yes, Lance was once #1, but that was when you could be in 17th place overall, and be #1 among the sports stations. Since I've been with John, we've finished in the Top 4 for six straight months, and the past 4 months we have had the highest rated individual show in recorded Houston sports radio history, each month being more highly rated than the previous. This is something we take pride and I did some chest thumping. Similarly, when Josh took over the afternoons, yes the show was "#1" but it was averaging less than a 2 share for 9 straight months. The afternoon show has average better than a 4 share for the most recent 9 months of ratings. Both shows were #1, but those are very different #1s.

Should I have gone on my mini-rant? I don't know. Prior to Friday's show, David Barron had written as many posts about ratings (1) as he had about "The Mighty Gwinn" in the past six months, and HMW, I believe, has done one ratings post since John and I went on our tear four months ago. And unless I'm mistaken, there is no other publication/website that posts Houston radio ratings. I'm very proud of what we've done--and yes I acknowledge all the factors involved--and I wanted to let people know about it and Friday felt like a good time.

Finally, why did I go at the way Lance does radio? I'm not quite sure other than the fact that there seems to be some smug sense of intellectual superiority held by 790's afternoon show that they could do what we do, they just choose not to because they want to talk "real" football. And that's cool, I guess, but it just doesn't make a lick of sense to me. If you're going to be in radio, shouldn't you want to do a show that people like and that a lot of people listen to? Shouldn't you look at the research and data and adjust if your style isn't working? Or should you just keep "doing you" and when it doesn't work, just declare that that's because the ratings system is flawed or that you're just too damn smart for your audience or gosh darnit it's just not fair because 610 has all the advantages?

I don't know, but I was once on a station in Kansas City that was up against a monster heritage station with the biggest team in town and the history and all that jazz... And I didn't complain or make excuses. I studied radio, I worked on my craft, and I became the first person ever to beat them and I did it in multiple timeslots. But I suppose just because that was my method, it doesn't make it superior to the method employed by some others which appears to be, "Make excuses, claim radio isn't your end game, fall back on a crew of diehard Twitter minions to shout your praises and then challenge people to absurd competitions." But, to each his own I suppose.

I'll close with this... I will accept Lance's offer to breakdown film of the interior lineplay of Chattanooga St. as long as he accepts my challenge to a backwards unicycle competition, because, the thing is, they're about equally relevant to hosting a successful talk show in Houston, and that's all I'm really focused on.

And now, in true HMW fashion, OUT.

WRAP IT UP

BIG UPS, to Lance and Nick for providing a word for the HMW readers.  Like I said earlier, I wanted to write some commentary but the guys got pretty in depth with the things they had to say and the fans can form their own opinions.

I can sum it up like this, Nick Wright shouldn't have mention Lance Zierlein if he's not going to represent and own it.  Other than that, I see nothing more than two alpha personalities in a fierce competition.  Yes, Nick is winning in the ratings but Lance Zierlein is still in his scope.

As far as the film breakdown bet, hell I would like to hear the two just do radio together.

Here is a twist, if we really wanted to make things interesting.  If we were to ask Seth Payne to be brutally honest and tell us what which host he likes the most on radio,   Lance or Nick, that answer would be quite interesting.  I just wonder.

NICK WRIGHT VS LANCE ZIERLEIN & LOCAL MARKET COMPETITION - LM

NICK WRIGHT PLAYING THE GAME RAW
Written by: LM
2-24-2013

Friday morning, Febuary 21 during one of In the Loop's reoccurring segments, Nick Wright mentioned Lance Zierlein's breaking down football film.  It was not mentioned in a complimentary fashion but as a way of saying what he's not going to do on air.  A few fans heard it, and took it Twitter.  Eventually the word got back to Lance and the "exchange of words" began.  I have heard "BEEF" on air, initially I do not think it was intended to be a "shot" but later it became much larger.  I also feel Lance did what any man would have done hearing his name and game being mocked. This has been brewing for quite sometime now and I wanted to address it from my point of view.  Lance and Nick's mix up is much more telling than the average fan can  comprehend and there's a power struggle at play.

EXCHANGE OF WORDS

(LISTEN)
NICK WRIGHT'S AUDIO

Check this out on Chirbit

As previously stated, Nick mentioned Lance "on air" and Lance replied via Twitter.  If you are truly looking at the psychology of "First Place", Nick Wright is not displaying it.  In all things competitive from Politics, World Dominance, Hip Hop, Cowboys, Yankees, or Lakers, rarely do you hear "First Place" even acknowledge who they believe are beneath them.  Example: The United States is not going to beef with the Country of Belize and if there is a case of America beefing with a lesser country, believe me, there's a resource we want that we don't have or have a limited supply of.

After, Nick made his comments, Lance and Nick exchanged a few words via Twitter.

Coming at Lance with the Vocation Tweet was somewhat surprising being that John Lopez giggle for four hours.  How can Nick tell Lance to work on his craft when his partner has a major flaw.

It was some more tweets but I think I captured the "meat" of their conversation.

I liked the back and forth between the two and it could have went longer but that wish was short lived because of "SIR LANCE ALOTS".

SIR LANCE ALOTS

SIR LANCE ALOTS is a term, I came up with talking to Craig about Lance Zierlein's fans who think it's their duty to defend Lance.  Nothing against Lance, in fact if I was him I would just lean back, smile and tell them "MORE SPIT PLEASE".  I get it, Lance is cool, he is not a pompous arrogant prick, he makes you feel like he's your friend but the truth is, you are a fan to Lance.  I will not say some of the fans are not Lance's "true" friends but for the most part you are a fan, it shouldn't get that serious that you are fighting his battles.  But LM, if someone say something about Craig, you will jump in!  Craig and I have a family/friend relationship.  Craig is my dude and if anything popped off and I thought I needed some back (although never utilized) I know I can hit him up on the "hello" and ask for his assistance but I would never invoke him because I don't need back-up.

It boggles my mind when fans feel the need to "shit talk" for hosts when they are getting nothing out of it.  I don't understand this behavior because men don't jump in men arguments.  If two hosts are going at it, let them go because fans jumping in, will make them pull back.  In other words, the fans skew the argument and personalities  feel the original argument is lost and there's no use to talking anymore.

RATINGS

610 Personalities love to boast ratings and I have no problem with "ratings" smack.  If this is the defined metric of listener-ship,  it's all good. I listen to many talk about ratings on the winning and losing end and it appears people have their reasons for 610's success.  Everyone seem to go back to the Texans and if you are simple with quantitative analysis, that would make sense but over the years, my thoughts have changed a tad.

I will try to explain using the Dallas Cowboys Flagship station 105.3 The Fan.  We all know Dallas Cowboys are one of the most popular brands.  If we are in Texas where football is supposed "KING" how do you explain the flagship station of one of the most famous teams in sports, struggling?  If you don't know,  610's former Program Director took a position in Dallas with the Cowboy's flagship station because they need help.

I can go many directions with ratings. When The Big Show surpassed 610 for one month in 2012, they ran with it via "Promos" like school school girls.  Yes, the Portable People Meters (PPMs) have flaws but that's that the ratings standard in radio.  Like the NFL Salary CAP, ratings and radio listening habits are hit or miss.  I do not think anyone has a solid understanding or do they?

I am about to go Nick Wright (he knows what I mean) and exposed something that was conveyed to me in private and say it publicly.  When Lance was a Free Agent basically working at 1560 the Game and pondering a move he called what was about to happen with 610.  Lance told me in so many words (post Texans first Playoff appearance), if the Texans go on a winning run, Sports Radio 610's ratings will "blow up".   In other words, it's more than simply saying "610 is doing well only because of the Texans).  We will discuss these Listeners who drive the ratings in Part 2 of Nick versus Lance.

PONDER THIS
I am beginning to wonder if Nick Wright is jealous of Lance Zierlein's status in Houston because it make no sense to keep invoking his name.  If Lance's football acumen is so dry and not what the fans, why do 610 constantly go after "Football Experts".  I hear a station constantly telling it's fans "knowing sports is second place behind knowing radio".  Here is a thought, go learn football and you won't have to feel inferior what another man is doing.

Bottom line, trying to discredit Lance Zierlein's knowledge of football is going to fail.  In the past HMW had major words with Lance but we were not dumb enough to go at this man's football, that's freaking crazy.  Let me put it another way, Nick going at Lance's Xs & Os is like Lance saying "Nick cannot prepare for a show".  You see where I'm coming from?   HMW have issues with Nick's phony persona but we are not about to say the dude don't bust his ass at doing his job.

When I resume this article, you will hear a few words from Lance Zierlein and Nick Wright regarding Friday's fiasco.  In addition to, I will also discuss Fans, Home Grown Houston Personalities and Nick Wright's on air behavior.

NICK WRIGHT ON DIVERSITY IN SPORTS MEDIA - NICK WRIGHT

I wrote an article a while back calling Nick Wright "THE NEW BLACK ACTIVIST: NICK WRIGHT".  In that article, I asked Nick Wright, if he could explain why there is only one minority in a full time position at SR610 and he replied with the following.

So I have been asked my thoughts on SportsRadio 610 not employing any black full-time talk show hosts, and I promised my full thoughts, and here they are later than promised, but still here they are.

I believe this to be an industry wide issue. That is not meant as a cop-out, and that doesn’t absolve SportsRadio 610 of responsibility, but I think it is important to discuss the industry wide issue first.

Here’s the thing, sports media, like essentially all forms of media these days, is driven by advertising dollars. And most advertisers, in my experience are going after suburban, white dollars. Advertisers also, again in my experience, are looking for “safe” hosts that won’t alienate their customer base. Unfortunately, and without merit I might add, many advertisers, and thereby many radio executives, don’t feel black sports radio hosts fit this bill unless you are in an overwhelmingly black market.

Now, my personal opinion is that this is all bullshit. I think people are afraid to try new things, and since sports media has been dominated by old, white guys basically forever, it is just easier to keep this trend going. Hiring a young person is looked at as a “risky hire” (I can attest to this personally), and hiring a minority is often looked at as an EXTREMELY risky hire. Again, I don’t believe there to be any merit behind these beliefs, but they certainly exist.

Look no further than Bomani Jones’ lack of full time radio employment, despite the fact that he has an enormous following and is as talented as anyone in sports media today. If there were a white media member who had hosted a very successful national radio show, was a regular on ESPN, a brilliant economics major who went to college at 16 and has two PhD parents and has a tremendous social media following, he would be getting job offers left and right. Instead, as Bomani told me a few months ago—and this might have changed since then—in the months after his Satellite show ended (the station he was on changed ownership), he didn’t get a single offer to do full time radio. This simply does not happen if Bomani Jones is white. By the way, if you want to read Bomani’s much more eloquent thoughts on a similar issue go right here http://www.bomanijones.com/bwb4/

Now, as far as my radio station goes, SportsRadio 610, here’s my thoughts: I believe my boss, Gavin Spittle, has done a TREMENDOUS job in scouring the country for the best talent, especially young talent, in sports radio. Josh Innes, who is as talented as anyone in the business under the age of 30, was plucked from Baton Rouge. Mike Meltser, who will be a network talk show host at some point if he so chooses, was plucked from obscurity in Connecticut. And Gavin found me in Kansas City.

I am certain that Gavin is looking for the best talent anywhere, and I am also certain that Gavin does not share the reservations that many of his colleagues nationwide do about hiring minority talent. Thus, the question is, why doesn’t 610 have any full time black talk show hosts? I would harken back to my previous paragraphs as at least partial reasoning. Gavin is looking for the best hosts to come to a major market and make an immediate impact. These hosts need experience before they get to Houston, and there are not nearly as many young black hosts getting the opportunities in smaller markets—like myself, Innes and Meltser did—and therefore there are not nearly as many young black hosts that have the reps and training requisite to get a job doing full time major market radio.

This is all very problematic on a meta level. The sports fan is done a disservice when the sports media is not as diverse as the teams that they are covering. Having a bunch of upper middle class white guys talking about potential off the field issues that a bunch of black guys—usually from very depressed environments in their youth—deal with is not going to be as informed of a discussion as it can be. Is there a solution? Sure. Stop catering sports talk, and sports media in general, to simply the “white sports fan” as I believe it currently is, and start catering it to “sports fans” in general. The advertisers will be there if the audience is, and if you do it right the audience will be there.

I could not be happier or prouder to be working for SportsRadio 610, and I do believe that 610 has a commitment to diversity that dwarfs much of its competition, locally and nationally. I also believe that this is an industry wide issue, and it would delight me if my radio station took even further steps to bucking this trend and setting a new industry standard.

Apologies for the rambling nature of these remarks. Again, you can read more informed opinions of this issue all over the internet—I linked to one earlier. But, I was asked for mine, and there they are.

I like to thank Nick for his opinion on this particular issue.  In the future I will have a rebuttal but for now, felt it would be pretty cool to see Nick's views on an issue some want to ignore.  Full disclosure, Nick wrote this in July but I am pretty  sure his views are the same and again thanks for the ink.

610 STRIP TEASE MORNING SHOW | NICK WRIGHT - LM

 610 STRIP TEASE MORNING SHOW

Nick Wright has been in the Houston a little over 2 months and the time is right to analyze “The Nick”.  It’s still very young but the show has not achieved the point of “I must hear or I will miss something” level.  In all fairness, I have heard Nick ask fans to continue to listen and he will deliver.

I have listened to In The Loop consistently for almost 6 weeks until Texans training camp and then reality set in.  Below, I itemize the positives and negatives of what I am hearing.

Let me start by saying, Nick radio persona is cool as hell.  When you listen to Nick, you feel like you are listening to a “Down to Earth” guy.  I like the way Nick can weave in and out of sports and social issues effortlessly and if he’s called to the carpet, he will admit to being wrong if that’s the case.  Nick seems like a person who you can bump into while walking your dog and find yourself in a conversational debate until midnight.  In otherworld’s, Nick is extremely opinionated.  Nick’s strong opinions are the one attribute I like most.  I am not saying everything Nick is delivering to the audience does not contain an element of sensation but for the most part, Nick presents what he’s willing to defend.

Another aspect I like about Nick is his work ethic.  From the month in a half I have listened, you know this guy bust his tail prepping information for a show.  Contrary to popular belief, show prepping is not feeding off the next shows hot topic or spot checking Twitter and ESPN for the hot story.  When I hear Nick, I know he’s going beyond in his prep what most fans are not willing to do.  Some in this market are tenured and think they can get away with “winging it” and that’s why I have an appreciation for hosts like: Craig Shelton, Sean Pendergast, Adam Wexler,  Lance Zierlein (football), Josh Innes, ND Kalu, Mike Melser, David Nuno, and Nick Wright.  Matters if you think the information they are presenting is trash or spectacular, the point is, they are behind the scenes trying to deliver what they feel may interest you.

There is no way I can write this article without talking about Nick’s interactive Social Media presence.  Nick is one of the few personalities in this market who are strong on the social media front.  This is not one of the media types who retweets “ass kissing” tweets, he will get down with you on a variety topics.

Now the Negatives

BLACK ACTIVIST
As I previously wrote a few weeks ago, I do not need Nick to shoot me every single race related story.  Everything is not about race and if you are going to address race, the subject matter needs to have substance.  I don’t care to hear about Joe Blow White Guy owning a pair of black boots so you obviously know what that means.  Some of the things Nick tries to hit on are reaching and it comes off “poverty pimpish” to me.

VOICE
Admittedly, Nick does not sound as nasally as what I heard when he was in Kansas City but Alvin Chipmunk is still there.   Just when I begin to accept Nick’s voice, oddly Texans Training camp started and marc Vandermeer joined In the Loop, that’s when it hit me again.  When Marc and John are talking, it sounds weird to hear Nick’s voice appear.  It’s similar to listening to grown men in conversation and Former Dr. Dre artist Michelle’ pops into the conversation.

OVERTALKING
Some may say, Lamont why is Nick’s voice not a problem when he’s working with John daily.  The answer is simple, he’s over talking John and Brien Straw so much, his voice is the only thing you hear.  This clearly has to come from working as a solo host for an extended period of time.  This is where it gets tricky,  is Nick really over talking John or is John underprepared and giving Nick the floor.  Over the years of listening to John Lopez, I think he is perfectly ok with Nick’s presentation.  Here is where it really gets odd, I am bitching about Nick talking too damn much but I ask myself, do you really want to hear more of John?  Nevertheless, Nick is going to have to manage it or he will receive more backlashes.

CALLER INTERACTION
It’s simple, they don’t tend to like calls and they rather text you to death.  I was told by Nick, his producer is to screen callers to see if it’s a good call before putting you on the air.  Yes, you have to perform for a call screener before talking to THE NICK. The text allows them to blast you with no rebuttals because it’s not like they are going to read a follow up.  What I truly don’t understand about Nick’s caller logic, if you don’t bad callers, why are you ok with reading bad texts?

THE STRIP TEASE RADIO

Outside of wanting to hear some Texans Xs and Os, the last element of Nick that has made me turn the dial frequently is ALL OF THE DAMN TEASES.  My goodness, I never heard anything like it in any genre of radio.  Nick Wright teases the teases.  If you are not following me, allow me to reenact a typical Strip Tease Morning.

THE TEASE At 7:30 we are going to hit on this, at 7:45 we are going to talk about that but at 7:40 we are going to follow up on what we talked about 7:15 and 8:00 we will recap everything we hit on in the 7 O Clock hour.

Or

When John or Brien finally gets a question in, you will likely hear.  We are going to talk about that at 8:30 and I will have a guest on to elaborate on it in the 9 O clock hour.

It’s so annoying, as a long time listener to radio I guess I am accustomed to certain things  and time/content memory is one I am not ready to take on.  I know in Nick’s mind he feels he’s providing a service but I wonder if he also factored in unintended consequences.  If you are laying out the times of when every single topic is going to be discussed, what will stop me from saying, I will check out the Big Show or Madd Hatta until he hits on what I want to hear.  However it’s not only the teases on top of teases it’s the volume of topics and the rapid pace they run through them.  They do not allow a topic to marinate long enough before moving on to the next topic.    The one good thing I can say, it lets me know, there are very few topics In The Loop is going to miss which also points back to Nick’s ability to show prep but I don’t like it and I much rather listen elsewhere.

WRAP IT UP

I think Nick will do find in this market but I think he has to address some minor things in his arsenal.  Nick is fun and do not have a problem making fun of himself and from what I have heard, he seems to take criticism.  I think In The Loop is fun but the time of the year(football) and a few elements I do not care for has yet to make it a MUST LISTEN for me.

BLACK PANTHER: NICK WRIGHT - LM - 7.18.2012

Talk about an odd post however I will take a stab at it.  Move over Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Julian Bond, we got NICK WRIGHT.

Nick Wright is the co-host of Sports Radio 610 Morning Show "In The Loop".  For the most part, Nick seems like a cool guy.  I credit Nick for bringing masculinity back to 610 Morning Talk and that's no jab at Marc Vandermeer but I highly doubt Nick is going to be down with John Lopez waving his feet in his face.  Nick has been in Houston a little under two months but from what I gather, Brother Nick thoroughly prep for his show and usually delivers.  Every now and then, if the topic leaves the "sports arena" and veers off into social injustices, Brother Nick gets a tad animated.

The passage above is "Radio Nick" but "Twitter Nick" is a damn Black Panther.

I really wonder how this "Black Activism" thing is going to work out for Brother Nick Wright.  I think it may come back to bite him in the ass in due time.

Is Nick the product of a Maxine Walters and Jesse Jackson tango?  My goodness, everything is not about black and white and its so damn transparent  if Nick thinks we are going to go ape off of every single racial tweet or retweet.

I will help Nick out, instead of tweeting superficial black and white stories, get in the damn communities or how about talking about the the imbalance of minority hires at 610?  How do you feel about Sports Radio 610 only having John Lopez (minority whether he knows it or not) in a full time capacity on air? I mean SR610 is the Sports Radio Leader, is that a proper correlation to the City of Houston's demographics or is it an inverse?  See, but your rebuttal along with your boss Gavin Spittle is "best man for the job" but you really want to talk race?

Instead of tweeting about racial topics that mean nothing to paying my bills, lets get a little real and talk about bellies  getting bigger and feet getting longer ie real issues.

uh hmmmm

WRAP IT UP

I get flustered when people use" black" as damn sideshow.  I like to call them "Poverty Pimps". A Poverty Pimp is a person who benefits from the suffering of minorities. Absolute refusal to talk about  real black issues instead they chase the salacious stories for reaction.  It's an insult to my intelligence.

I do not believe Nick is a Poverty Pimp however stop making everything a racial injustice.

SCENARIO:  Black man in First Colony assaults his family.  Media trucks pull up and they see Mr. Johnson (black tax paying citizen) across the street watering his grass and "PoJo nem" (black belligerents) down the street listening to Hip Hop Music, pants sagging, grills, and blowing big kill.  More than likely, at 10pm CST, you will see "PoJo nem"  on the evening news talking about the story.

I  hope Nick Wright is able to make the right decision when he jumps out of the truck.

Some of us black people will not hop on any and everything "black" Brother Nick.
