A SPANISH ERIN ANDREWS?

I don’t know Ines Sainz from Johnny Sain, Del Ennis, Josh Innes, or the Seine River, but I do know that she is trying to get herself some free publicity. Since nobody has been sneaking video cameras into her hotel rooms to catch her walking around naked, she has decided to become more famous her way.

Sainz is a 32 year-old former Miss Spain (1997) who mixes sex appeal and news reporting, which raises the often-asked question: Can a female reporter be taken seriously as a journalist and be sexy? She often is on the borderline, as she likes to wear skin-tight or revealing outfits while conducting interviews with athletes. The one-time beauty queen has referred to herself as the sexiest sports reporter in Mexico.




She’s been referred to as a combination of Cindy Crawford, Jenna Jameson, and Michelle Tafoya. She's a sideline reporter that looks like a mix of supermodel and pornstar and would give Erin Andrews a definite run for her money.

 

The former Miss Spain has been featured on several magazine covers, including Esquire (Spanish version), and the Spanish-language men's magazines, Gente and Hombre.

If you’ve been following “Hard Knocks” on HBO, you’ve probably seen the fraternity house atmosphere of the New York Jets’ camp. Coach Rex Ryan runs a loose camp and he's proud of it. All you had to do was watch five minutes of "Hard Knocks" this summer and you can see why the Jets will never have a problem recruiting free agents.

This season may have great prospects for the Jets. It’s inexcusable if they make big headlines for the wrong reasons. This might even be a hindrance in their season opener tonight vs. Baltimore, especially if the receivers are overthrown, as they were in front of Ines on Saturday.

Reports came out Sunday (9/12) that Roger Goodell and the Jets are now investigating complaints from the Association of Women in Sports Media on behalf of Ms. Sainz, who was reporting for TV Azteca (Mexico) at the Jets’ training facility in Florham Park, NJ, over the weekend. She complained she was bombarded with catcalls and vulgar antics at the training facility to the extent she tweeted in Spanish, "I'm dying of embarrassment!".

According to the allegations, players and coaches seemed to intentionally overthrow passes in her direction, whistled at her, openly ogled her, and blocked her path as she attempted to walk away. She also claims she was the victim of "suggestive comments" from some players. As far as members of the coaching staff "accidentally" overthrowing receivers, so the ball would land near her, some players might have been distracted by her jeans.

Sainz defended her appearance at the Jets practice session, insisting she dressed modestly. "Jeans and a white button-up blouse are in no way inappropriate," she tweeted, while posting a photo of her attire (pictured, right).

She also tweeted, "Thanks everyone for your support. I already spoke to the NFL, which will decide if there will or will not be consequences. I can say that at the time I didn't want to pay attention to what was happening, but the rest of the media heard clearly and in solidarity have denounced what happened, hoping that there is always a respectful climate."





The NY Post reported that Jets' owner, Woody Johnson, spoke to Sainz on Sunday, and the team is planning educational awareness sessions for the team.

HMW believes there is no reason for women who prefer to work in sports business media to be subjected to unfair treatment. The days of women being intimidated while covering sports is long gone. They deserve to be treated with respect and given the same access and courtesy as their male counterparts. But if this study shows that Sainz was subjected to harassment, then Rex Ryan should be held accountable, as well as any of his players, who may have treated her badly.


Though Erin Andrews’ video was on the Internet since February 2009, she and her lawyer didn’t come out with the story until July, a couple of months before the 2009 football season. By that time they had contacted all the US websites that had the hotel room videos and threatened them with lawsuits. Most took the video down right away and the others did when they realized Erin’s lawyer and The Disney Company weren’t fooling around. Erin got a lot of sympathy and celebrity status out of this. The rest is history.

As mentioned above, there are no hotel room videos of Ines, so she did it her way. But just like Erin Andrews (pictured left), Ines Sainz who is now in her 30’s and outgrowing her current job, besides getting some nice publicity out of this, will probably get ahead in her career, as a result of this incident. I get a feeling this is not the first time in her TV career that she has been ogled, sexually harassed, heard catcalls, etc., but this is a great opportunity for her and she jumped at it. Smart girl!

I don't know if the local sports talk hosts will hit this topic, and if they do, I don't know what their angle on this story will be, if any, but all they have to do is remember what the Third Commandment of the Ten Commandments of Sports Talk Hosts is: "A woman hath no place in Sports. Thou shalt not forget this".
