Bob McNair needs Rick Smith, Fire the PR firm

I debated whether to write about Bob McNair.  After watching my friend Jermaine Every's video piece, Bob McNair needs to retire , I decided to share my thoughts.

No offense to Jermaine or many others who are consumed in groupthink, I wanted to approach the discussion from a different angle.

Many are consumed with Bob McNair retiring, semantics of an idiom or racism.  I believe there's more meat on this bone

Bob McNair's People

When the Wall Street Journal dropped the headline on Bob McNair, I instantly wondered, "who is Bob McNair's publicist, who is the Public Relations person or firm in charge".  Common sense would lead me to believe publications outside of maybe John McClain with the Houston Chronicle has to go through people to get a sit down with McNair.  Why would you want McNair  hashing up a story he's not going to alter public opinion?  No matter if McNair are right or wrong, public opinion has made up their mind and the only outcome is making a year old matter worse.

Thursday, Mike Meltser and Seth Payne had the person who wrote the article.  He said he talked to McNair's people and they felt Bob wanted to set the record.

After I heard this, not only is the problem Bob McNair's reluctance to let an issue go away, his "people" are equally responsible.  Whoever this contact person(s) are could have shut it down by saying "No thanks WSJ".

Rick Smith

As I thought about the timeline of events, something stood out.  Bob McNair's comments corresponded with the same time Rick Smith began dealing with his personal issues.  Bob McNair made his initial "inmate" comment in October.  According to Rick Smith, he was taking time away from the team in September.  I am not suggesting that Rick Smith has control over McNair but maybe Rick was more than just a General Manager.  Maybe Rick was hi adviser.   Hell, we all joked that Rick had Bob's ear, it's looking like, that may not be too far fetch.  In other words, if Rick was free of personal issues and 100% locked in with all of the stuff that was going down, I believe he would have steered McNair in the politically correct direction.

As far as Bob McNair retiring, I've been called for this for the product on the field, not because of Faux Outrage.  I think the Texans has a communications problem organization-wide.  From Coaches and GMs not on the same page to McNair to a coach unable to make routine in game decisions.  It appears the Texans have issues with communication.

Jim Mudd: 610 not allowed go 90 Seconds without talking Texans

Josh Innes and Jim Mudd are confirming all of my conspiracy theories.   I do not believe Sports Radio 610 are homers but I think they cling to the Texans well.  It's literally all they talk about and they do not hide it.  As a matter of fact they may even send this shit to Texans to prove they talk Texans 24/7.

Since Josh and Jim assumed morning duties on Sports Talk 790, they have been dropping nuggets about 610.  Josh and Jim were former 610 employees and know how the stationed is programmed. 

I'm a radio slut, and I love hearing shit like I heard today.  During an Astros give away,   Jim revealed that the Texans are mandated to talk Texans and they couln't go longer than 90 seconds without it

Houston Texans revokes Josh Innes and Jim Mudd's Press credentials

The Houston Texans stripped Josh Innes and Jim Mudd of their press credentials.  Josh can be critical of local teams but for the most part, he's seem relatively upbeat about the Houston Texans.

I hear him saying what everyone is saying, Texans will win 7-9 games.  He's given JJ Watt mad props for his charity work during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

If I had to guess, Sports Radio 610 has their hands all over this.  I remember when Josh returned to Houston, he had an interview sat up with a Texan player and 610 nixed.  A few weeks ago, Josh revealed he'd heard through the grapevine 610 had plans to counter his show.

UPDATE:  Josh Innes and Jim Mudd's credentials may have been pulled because they infiltrated the Houston Texans practice.   August 22nd, Josh sent Jim Mudd to the Texans practice.  Jim was on the phone with the show while Josh had him to ask fans questions.  Jim got kicked out of a specific area and told he couldn't record.

The only local team I could see revoking Josh's credentials would be the Houston Rockets.  The Rockets and Josh openly hates each other.   Josh's coworkers are on The Rockets side and telling on him.  That shit is epic funny.

I fully expect the rhetoric to get heated in the coming months.

Did John McClain violate Texan's media policy?

Today as I was listening to the Blitz. During the second hour they announced that Kareem Jackson was practicing at safety.

I thought about a specific bullet point I seen in the Texans's media policy.

Kareem is a Corner Back and media has speculated for years about him playing Safety.

As I listened to Fred and AJ, I asked myself, should I even know this information? Don't get me wrong, I love knowing it but the Texans under Bill O'Brien operates in secret.

I wanted to know who put this out.  I went to Twitter and you know the rest of the story

Chances are, a professional like John McClain cleared his tweet with the Texans, right?

I doubt it, John is displaying that he's the big man on campus and the rules do not apply to him.  I mean, what are the Texans going to do, remove the Tennessee Oilers Beat Writer?

Sports Radio 610's Matt Hammond favors Bill O'Brien over Mike Tomlin

Over the last couple of months, I've decided to give Matt Hammond a second try.  I will not lie, I went at him pretty hard but he's a young man trying to make a living.  He is not a bad guy.

Matt's radio style is analogies. He relies on anlogies.  Matt was one of the few people (if any at all) who called a trade for Brock Osweiler when most thought Houston was not up for parole for another year.

Now that I've gotten the mushy stuff out of the way, Matt Hammond may have had one of the strangest takes I've ever heard.  According to the audio below, Matt favors Houston Texans Bill O'Brien over Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin.

I thought I heard wrong and I was about to listen again before seeing (ESPN 975) AJ Hoffman's tweet.

Matt's bigger point was,  look at the QBs those coaches had.  I get the correlation of coaches but O'Brien is no where near the coach of Tomlin.   O'Brien had one of the most unimaginative offenses I have ever seen in Houston.   People like to say "look what O'Brien was dealt".  O'Brien has consistently told us, he is part of the decision making, it's a partnership.

If anyone should be compared, it should be Texans Defensive Coordinator Romeo Crennel because he is the only the reason the Texans has been relevant.  Matt wants people to give O'Brien credit.  It's odd because I think O'Brien receives too much credit in Houston.

Local Media: Brian Cushing is going to be cut

If I believed everything most of local media were saying a few years ago and even last year, Brian Cushing should be cut.  These idiots don't know what the hell they are talking about. It makes me want to puke for having to listen to some of their bullshit.

The logic was, 2017, Cushing's contract would be more favorable for the Texans.  For years, Cushing's contract was structured in a way that would hurt the Texans financially if they released him.  The Texans cap situation was not as pretty as it is today therefore it caused unofficial capologist to make uninformed predictions.

Cushing has not been cut and from everything I'm hearing, I don't expect him to be cut.  Texans are still in the Training Camp so technically it could happen but I doubt it.  The Texans are in a good cap situation so there is no incentive to make the moves people were predicting.

The problem is, people fall into a habit of looking at sports static.  They isolate a time period, freeze everything else and make predictions based upon that specific time.  They do not even consider the future and other variables that can change outcomes.

For example, currently the Texans do not have a 1st or 2nd Round 2018 Draft Pick.  Most have already expressed concerns without considering it's a year a way and Rick Smith could recoup those picks.

Most in Houston were wrong about Brian Cushing being cut and I hope they learn from it.  Who am I kidding?  These cats will not learn and they will do it again.  The way they will remedy their incorrect prediction about  Cushing is by simply not talking about it.

Cal McNair is running the #Texans

For years we have laughed about the son of Texans Bob McNair, Cal McNair being irrelevant. Rarely was he involved to the public's knowledge of any significant decisions.

Several sources have confirmed Bob's health is reducing his role in the organization.   It has also come to my attention that Bob is not speaking to the media as he would in the past.  I cannot remember a time when Bob has not spoken with the media in the off season after a high profile draft. What's interesting is how the local media is "hush hush" or not even thinking about the visible public absence.

When you think about it, this whole off-season was odd and uncharacteristic of what we are accustom to with Bob's Texans.

• Little to no free agents moves
• Drafting a Quarterback
• The way the Texans drafted a Quarterback
• Training Camp moved to West Virginia

West Virginia is interesting because it's more of a controlled environment than practicing in Houston with fans.

I do believe Cal has been running the Texans for a while without the public's knowledge. I am not sure if it's permanent or temporary but I do know Cal's role has increased in the organization.  

#Texans Training Camp Day 1: John McClain says Watson reminds him of Warren Moon

Let me began by saying, Warren Moon is my favorite QB and I love the DeShaun Watson pick.  I like Warren because he threw a pretty ball and had a hell of a team but they flamed in the playoffs.  I like DeShaun Watson because the young man appears humble and he balled out in college.

Houston Chronicle's John McClain is either drunk or desperately trying to get clicks.  The first day of Training,  John delivered this beauty,

On the surface, this tweet is harmless until you really think about it.  It's probably the dumbest shit I've seen John tweet.  I mean, this tops him crying on Twitter about Ed Reed snubbing him at the airport.

John enjoys the fact that he is one of the few in Houston who has seen both players in their NFL rookie years during the off-season and Training Camp,  I give him John that, but come on, it's lame and lazy to compare a rookie to a Hall of Famer on the first day of camp.

I read this tweet and I thought he was talking demeanor but his emphasis on "one practice" I thought football.  Either way it's simple.  It looks like he's doing the "compare black QB to black QB" coupled with nostalgia to really drive it home.

The funniest part, I am sure Warren Moon who was an established Pro in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and nearly 30 years old loves to be compared to a 21 year old kid from Clemson.

As I read the tweet, I pictured John sitting back on this zinger all spring and summer long the moment the Texans drafted DeShaun Watson.

Training Camp: Freak Out about Duane Brown #Texans

Since  Houston Media loves to develop convenient amnesia, I decided to chart all of the stuff they thought was HUGE in July during training camp.

First thing first, it's my belief, Sports Radio 610 could not wait for Training Camp to bump or minimize Astros talk.  Sports Radio 610 is the flagship station for the Texans and Sports Talk 790 (direct competitors) are the flagship station for the Astros who are currently busting ass.

The Texans set off for Training Camp in West Virginia; Texans All-Pro Left Tackle Duane Brown  is listed as did not report.  You got it, PANIC TIME!  I listened to Mad Radio for 2 segments and I didn't hear them freak out but then I tuned to Paul Gallant (7p-11p 610) and he is totally freaking out about some comments Rick Smith (Texans GM) made about Duane Brown's hold out.  In addition to, I have seen just about all TV outlets report on Duane Brown's absence.

Here's the kicker, all of Houston knew that Duane was holding out, this is not news at all unless you are trying to get clicks.  News is when Duane appears with the team.

In all honesty, I only heard Paul discussing Duane's hold out on Radio but most of Houston TV and National  News was all over it like it was brand new.

            The NFL has completed the 2017 draft. Now comes the endless barrage of “draft grades.” Seriously, what is the basis of a draft grade? If these guys have never played a down in the league, how can we possibly give a grade? Is the grade based on team needs be fulfilled via the draft? Those team needs are media, and to a certain extent, fan-driven because we don’t know what the team itself actually feels is a need. It’s all subjective. With that being said, I’ll give you my version of the Texans draft:

1^st Round #12 Overall: QB Deshaun Watson- The trade up to acquire Watson was very un-Texan. By that I mean it was uncharacteristic of what we’ve seen from this regime (GM Rick Smith specifically). Sure they’ve moved up before, but not 13 spots in 1^st round to take a QB which the team hasn’t done in 1^st round since David Carr. Couple this with the 2^nd rounder given up to get rid of the stench of Brock Osweiller, this team has paid quite the price for their supposed franchise QB. I’m actually impressed; not only for the team’s aggressive move up, but taking a chance on a QB who may not be ready to play right away and going with Tom Savage as this season’s starter…for now.

2^nd Round #57 Overall: ILB Zach Cunningham- Another solid selection. Brian Cushing is past his prime. Benardrick McKinney has some upside, but has proven to be questionable in pass coverage. Max Bullough filled in okay at times, but is more of a 2 down guy. Enter Cunningham. He has the sideline to sideline speed the Texans have sorely lacked. Couple that with his arm length (34.5 inches), he can provide the cover LB this team has missed.

3^rd Round #89 Overall: RB D’Onta Foreman- For a team that wants to run the ball, protect a young QB (no matter who that may be), and control the tempo to set the table for a good defense, this was another good pick. Lamar Miller is a nice, shifty RB. But to pair him with a bulldozer like Foreman was a great idea. This should provide them with a balanced rushing attack, as well as have a guy for short yardage situations. Plus, Foreman has some game-breaking ability himself.

4^th Round #130 Overal: OT Julie’n Davenport- The Texans need OL help and it’s fairly obvious to those who even somewhat follow the team. Davenport may develop into a solid player along the OL, but I can’t envision a scenario in which he plays and contributes effectively this year. Although I’d love to be proven wrong.

4^th Round #142 Overall: DT Carlos Watkins- Considering the fact that JJ Watt may be able to come back from back surgery, and that Vince Wilfork may be retired,
Watkins seems to fit as a replacement for Wilfork. He also serves as a DL depth, something of which has proven to be very valuable to most, if not all, successful NFL franchises.

5^th Round #169 Overall: DB Treston Decoud- DB depth is another necessity.  Ron Wolf of Green Bay believes in drafting a QB and DB in every draft. The Texans are set on Kareem Jackson, Jonathan Joseph, and Kevin Johnson being their top 3 guys. There was some talk of Jackson possibly playing at Safety, but that’s purely media and fan speculation. If Decoud can find a way to crack the lineup, Jackson at Safety is one way, finding a way to supplant one of the incumbents will prove to be a tough mountain to climb.

7^th Round #243 Overall C Kyle Fuller- OL was an issue last year, and could continue to be this year. It appears as if the Texans are counting on Nick Martin or Greg Mancz to fight it out for starting Center, Xavier Su’a Filo to greatly improve his play, Duane Brown to return to pre-injury form, and either Fuller or previously drafted Davenport to flesh out the rest of their OL. Fuller comes from a spread attack, however, they ran a lot of zone run plays. Let’s see how this 7^th rounder works since Derek Newton panned out okay considering he was drafted in the 7^th as well.

            No one really thought the Texans were going to have as good a draft as they did. Looks like they picked up a few guys who actually give fans, and onlookers, a reason to have hope for the future; but again, only time will tell how good this draft class will turn out. So far on the surface, things are looking bright.

FED UP WITH HOUSTON TEXANS BEAT WRITER JOHN MCCLAIN?

I have been observing the Houston Texan’s Beat Writer John McClain “THE GENERAL”.  I understand The General’s job in the beat writer capacity is to report facts as it pertains to the Texans.  I admit, the whole “Beat Writer” title meant nothing to me or shall I be honest, I didn’t know the parameters of the job.  Now, I have a solid understanding of a beat writer.  It becomes a little tricky when it comes to John because his role as a Beat Writer frequently blends with opinion.

No need to “sugar coat” this, when I hear John McClain on air, it seems as if he’s more interested in Robert Griffin III, Tennessee Titans and Hollywood ten times more than the Texans. As a rabid Texan Fan, part of me believes this could be by design for John to avoid saying the wrong thing about the Texans.  Example:  Few weeks back while talking to In the John said “the Texans could have traded Ben Tate for a 1st rounder with the Browns”, it caught a little local steam and his very next visit he said he was wrong.  What I am getting to, the conspiracy theorist in me believes John’s “security blanket” is to appear aloof about the Texans in order not to say anything wrong or out of place in regards to the Texans.

These days, all of the local media is trying to stay in the good graces of local professional teams, credentials come at a premium.

MATT SCHAUB ONLY BLEW ONE GAME?

This past Sunday, I was listening to John McClain on with Fred Davis and Ted Johnson (SR610), and Matt Schaub came up.  The General suddenly transformed into Ray Charles and forgot a lot.  During the segment, John basically said he can only remember ONE game Matt Schaub blew, Baltimore Ravens and oh yeah we are all preposterous.  Contrary to Josh Innes beliefs, we are not all “sheeple” who wants smoke blown up our ass, be honest.  I am jacked about this season and I can only imagine the possibilities with the return of Matt Schaub but I am not a fool.  I can think of at least three games off the top I can blame on Matt Schaub.

• 2010 Chargers
• 2009 Cardinals

In the Raiders game some say Schaub could have rushed, and some say Jacoby ran the wrong route.  I say, Matt was the last Texan to touch the Hog Skin.  If I’m not mistaken, Schaub had other options he could have gone to and oh by the way, that’s the same game, an Oakland Raider Tommy Kelly said Matt Schaub Choked.

In a position to go in for the win, Matt Schaub threw a low ball to Andre Johnson that bounced off his ankle and landed in a Charger hand.  Some argue, Andre could have caught the ball but I would say, why throw the ball at Andre's ankle.

When John McClain made his comment, I instantly thought about the 2009 Cardinals game.  For John to say, Schaub only blew one game, I think to myself “wtf man” he blew the Cardinals  very similar to the Ravens and some can even argue, the Cardinals “Pick 6” was even bigger because we ended the season 9-7 and watching the last games of the season to get in the playoffs which we didn’t.  We finished the season the year we played Baltimore 6-10.  

I am sure others can name more games that were a direct reflection on Schaub’s play.  As far as Schaub never loss a game but the Ravens, it seems as if we are assuming games are only loss in the 4th quarter.   It would be easy for me to pull games where Schaub and the Texans played like crap for a half or three quarters and finally made plays in the 4th quarter when the games were so out of reach the opponent’s defense laid down.  Yep, I am talking about the season the media all likes to go back to when referencing Schaub’s 9,000 yards while conveniently forgetting we were all bitching about the Texans not playing a full game.

WRAP IT UP

Lately, when I hear John McClain, it’s a “damn if you do, damn if you don’t”.  Damn if you talk about Texans because he sounds like a “homer”, Damn if you don’t because people will demand more Texans talk.

Earlier I said John’s Texans aloofness was a defense mechanism but to be real, when I hear John, he sounds so disinterested with the Texans and giddy about everything “NOT TEXANS”.

When he was on with Ted Johnson, John is noticeably excited talking about the Patriots and when it's time to actually talk Texans, well you heard it.

John McClain “I wouldn’t say it, if it wasn’t confirmed” and the next appearance, admitting to a mistake.

I don’t dislike John but he is clearly displaying a giddiness for everything “NOT TEXANS” while being a "blah" when talking about the Texans.  The audio I presented, you hear John being more excited to talk to Ted Johnson about the Patriots and telling Nick Wright basically to move on from the Texans talk, I need to get my Jerry Sandusky Pulp Fiction One liner in.

I wish John McClain could sound more interested in the Texans.  In addition to, when he talks about the Texans, I don't want any of this UTOPIA crap of Texans do no wrong. There has to be a middle ground in John's information dissemination.   Lately I have been looking at Mark Berman (Fox 26) as the Texans Beat Writer.

Tuesday morning I was cruising the streets while listening to the Big Show. At some point during the second hour of the show, I heard a comment come out of Matt Jackson’s that almost made me run off the road and fall to my death in Galveston Bay.  As a Houstonian and avid sports fan, there are certain names you can’t approach with sloppy commentary:  Hakeem, Earl, Nolan, Moon, Childress, and Andre Johnson.  I am not even a huge baseball guy but I know the value of Nolan Ryan partly because my stepdad slapped the taste out my mouth because I said Nolan was not that good. 

The Big Show (790) was talking about Free Agent Wide Receivers and it was normal dialogue between the guys.  Adam Wexler was pretty much running point guard when he mentioned Vincent Jackson.  They begin talking about Vincent in terms of  free agency. It appeared, Lance and Adam were locked on Andre Johnson but Matt Jackson said he would take Vincent over Andre.  Matt Jackson is the local version of ESPN's Skip Bayless.  My blog does very little to what transpired on Tuesday.  It's a must hear for yourself.

Matt Jackson started throwing Vincent Jackson stats while elaborating on Andre Johnson’s injuries.  Sometimes Monty Mont is known to take people words literally which makes them whine about being taken out of context therefore I want you good folk to hear it for yourself.

Now that we got that out of the way, Matt Jackson’s argument is flawed.

• Vincent Jackson also had nagging injurie
•  In terms of career, Johnson (4) Years of David Carr
•  Jackson (4) years of Phillip Rivers
• Ask any creditable football mind who are the top 3 receivers, Vincent Jackson is not one of them
•  Andre never truly had a decoy on the opposite side
• Put a healthy Andre and Vincent on the Free Agency Market, who get picked up first at the most money

If Matt Jackson is going to go all stats/production of saying Vincent is better than Andre then by the transitive property Calvin Johnson, Wes Welker, Victor Cruz, Larry Fitzgerald', Steve Smith, Roddy White, Jordy Nelson, Brandon Marshall, Mike Wallace, Hakeem Nicks, Dwayne Bowe,Marques Colston are also better than Andre Johnson.  The names mention above are all guys above Vincent Jackson.

Matt is no slow slouch though, more than likely he will say I am talking about Vincent Jackson vs Andre Johnson.  I cannot discount what my eyes have witnessed for nine years.  No one on this God green planet will convince me Vincent Jackson is better than Andre Johnson, that's insane.  Matt's comment to me was similar to Mike Lombardi calling Texans' soft.  Sure you can argue your point but you are talking to deaf ears and everything you say beyond that is not heard.

WRAP IT UP

As the show progressed and the backlashed received, it seems as if Matt Jackson qualified his argument but not to the point of going back on his original statement, he owned it.  Twitter counterpart Frobeus said it best, Matt's comment was Dylan Gwinn caliber.  In my opinion, this further proves my point of Matt trying to disagree so damn much at times it puts him on the unpopular side of the fence.  Notice I didn't said wrong because all of this is subjective and yes I have a bias towards Andre Johnson but so does 99.9% of football enthusiast.

If Rick Smith were to cut Andre Johnson and acquire Vincent Jackson, he would have to escape Houston by night at the Sugarland  Airport.

As far as Lance and Adama I can thoroughly understand them not having anything to do with that conversation.  In all fairness, Lance tried to defend Matt but it's not happening this way.  Larry, Calvin Johnson are arguable not no freaking Vincent Jackson however he would make a cold ass number 2.

NFL REFEREE JEROME BOGER & CREW "COLOSSAL FAILURES" - LM

I am going to jump in head first, the NFL officiating of the Texans versus Colts Thursday Night was atrocious. I can take getting my ass beat, I mean I'm a Texan.  What I cannot take is being jabbed by the refs.  NFL Referee Jerome Boger, he is enemy number one and I don't care about letter of the law and rules.  Jerome and his crew flat out determined the outcome of a win or loss.  I just wanted to key on (2) plays in particular, the Chaon full nelson on Joseph and the Glover Quinn breathing on a Colt receiver.  Below is the video.

As far as the Local Media, I don't know if there is an unspoken code of not calling officials out but I swear if I hear someone say "I am not the one to whine about officiating, BUT".  Man what's the deal, y'all have eyeballs, y'all seen what America saw.  It's nothing wrong with blowing a gasket on BS calls.  You are not whining, in fact you may garner more love from your audience.  All day Friday I listened to a media who tried everything in their person not to elaborate on the officiating determining the outcome of the game.  Hear me out, they talked about officiating but it was  like a sidebar when to me that was the main story.  Man we are talking about a playoff bye and media trying to analyze the game when we were cheated.  I am not singling anyone out because I understand professionals trying to conform to objectivity.  I am not advocating anyone writing a letter to the NFL but man, they could have simply been a fan.  All Thursday night I was retweeting National sports pundits echoing the officiating of the game.  

Last but not least, I have been one of the loudest opponents of this new NFL officiating.  I don't see how you tell 2 to 3 hundred pound barbarians to become tinkle bells.  The Subjectivity in NFL officiating is making the game a football an event not a sport.  It's almost like they are marketing this great game to females and men are a bonus.
